My machine has ODD

I have a lovely old Kenmore that is 30 years old. She's been oiled, cleaned, threaded, tested. Now, of course, as I begin to test my fabric for my first project, it jams with the first stitch. Every time, there is a peice of thread stuck in the shuttle. A separate peice of thread! how is my machine doing this?

Maybe it's time to tilt her up out of the tray and do some cleaning?

Have you put in a new needle? And are you testing on "easy" fabric? ie cotton?
I would manually advance the needle for a few stitches, to try to see what is happening. Then check the bobbin holder... they are tricky little things!
