So my step dd just turned 18 and we're going to celebrate with her in a couple of weeks. Every year we get her a birthday present and it always feels inadequate. There's a difference between the kind of thing you buy for your kid (more personalized, something they're just dying for...) and something you buy for anyone else. Our presents feel like a 'for anyone else' present and not like a 'for my child' present to me.
The thing is we don't really *know* her. We see her every couple of months or so, but about 6 years ago (when dh and I moved in) dh's ex got jealous and handled it by withdrawing his right to see his dd. We went from seeing her almost weekly to seeing her only 1-2 times a year and never really having the chance to talk to her even then from the time she was 12 until she was 16. Then she became more independant and we've seen her more often and even talk to her on the phone like once a month, but we still don't know her all that well.
She's a senior in high school and will be going to college in the fall (she chose a school that's closer to us so that we can see her more
). She's really into performing arts - singing, dancing, playing instruments, drama... We can't ask her mom for help because she isn't much of a help.
I REALLY want to give her something special. something that she'll really like. Any ideas?
