cloth diaper question - Page 2

I always suggest FB for newbies cause they are the closest to the ease of disposables. I dont really like prefolds personally. LOL I only use them when I didnt keep up on the laundry and that's all that is left. Prefolds are way cheap though.......WAY cheap. If I was doing it just for money reasons, I would do prefolds cause they arent THAT much harder, I'm just super lazy. LOL

nak...lol

i dont rinse them until they eat solids, then I just dump the poop off, whatever doesnt fall in a shake over the toilet, gets washed. LOL No rinsing here! lol

I do cold pre-wash and then a reg hot wash (1/4 cup detegent). i dont use baking soda or vinegar or anything.....

The sun is *awesome*
I agree with that, too, but my sweet baby seems to have driven the sun away. I don't think we've had 5 sunny days since he was born. Let me tell you, diapers get neither dry nor bleached sitting outside in a drizzle.

but if you hang them in the window, you would be surprised! i was! as long as they are wet (i have had to rewet for a few days) the sun's rays will sun them if in a window that light enters your home.
ive cut down on the # of diapers that need to be sunned by using my method, but even in New England, the sunning works in a window (ive never tried putting them outside so i dont konw about that)

Yeah, Fuzzibunz.... and an insert.

Maybe you can buy just one or two (with an insert), and see how you like it. If you hate it, you can always sell it on the TP or on eBay, or one of the mamas here would probably buy it from you.

Just remember a couple of things when you wash your cloth diaper.
NEVER use fabric softener or bleach on it. Never ever.
And use a free and clear detergent, or better yet, a natural detergent.

I use the birdseye flats from Diaperware. I double them up before folding because baby Winter pees like a firehose.
I used Kissaluvs at first but had trouble with absorbancy.
I also use prefolds with wool covers and I have some Fuzzi Bunz as well.
For my 2 year old DS I use Muttaqin fitteds with wool covers or Muttaqin AIOs.
I don't have a preference. I like them all.
I have 30 diapers for my 2 year old and 24 flats, 12 prefolds and 30 Fuzzi Bunz and I wash every 3 days.

ETA:
I use a dry pail. I do not pre-rinse but for the older one I will dump solid poops in the toilet. The rest I throw straight in the washer on wash day, run a quick cold rinse with no detergent, then a hot wash with about 1/4 cup of Sun detergent on the longest wash cycle with a cold rinse.
I follow up with an extra quick cold rinse with no detergent to avoid detergent build up.
Detergent is very important. I recommend Allen's Naturally, Sportwash or another additive-free detergent or you will get build-up. Do not use any Free and Clear detergents or anything that has a stain repellent, UV brighteners or anything that says "brightens colors" "repels stains" or any such nonsense. These are all horrible for your diapers and will cause repelling fleece, stinky diapers and possibly open weeping sores on your kid's bum. Not fun AT ALL.

Oh hey Michelle I have some girly colored Fuzzi Bunz I'm trying to sell but I'm too lazy to get them up on Ebay. PM me if you want a couple.

I use these cloth diapers. I got a package of 30 diapers, 30 inserts and 6 covers for less than $200 CDN (size small - birth to 6 months or up to 18 lbs). They are AWESOME. Easy to use, easy to wash. The inserts mean that the diapers dry fast - usually in one cycle. I can't say enough about these diapers or the woman who makes them. They've been totally great!

My method for handling the diapers is:

I use a standard diaper pail filled with cold water and vinegar (about half full - the diapers I add will bring it to the top of the pail by was day). I don't bother rinsing out the poopy diapers yet because I'm bfing and they're not especially bad or smelly. I have a front loading washer which slightly complicates things. I drain the diapers in my tub, squeeze out the excess moisture (wearing rubber gloves) and plop them back into the pail and take them to the wash where I toss them in the machine. I use 1/4 cup of biodegradable non-scented detergent and 1/4 cup of borax in the load. I do a double rinse and an extra hard spin cycle. Then I chuck it all in the dryer and voila!

If I had a top loading washer I'd be able to skip the bathtub, draining, squeezing part entirely and just dump the full pail into the washer.
