So I'm watching the show "Crisis Zone" on Discovery Health, where they show the organization Doctors w/out Borders helping out in third world countries, providing health care, emergency medicine, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I think what they do is sorely needed and a great thing.

However, there was a segment on the ep I just watched that really rubbed me the wrong way. The narrator said that Sierra Leone has the highest rate of deaths in newborns and moms during childbirth. Now, I'm sure that's accurate, but it probably has WAAAAY more to do with lack of clean water, inadequate nutrition, lack of sanitation everywhere esp during the birth, not being able to diagnose fetal distress, etc etc.

However, what the clear implication was - that SL has these scary rates of newborn and mom deaths b/c they don't have westernized intervention filled prenatal care and births. They showed a midwife helping a mom in labor, and she remarks "it sounds like she's in some pain" and shows her hanging an IV! GRRRR.: Uh huh, the mom was in so much "pain" she didn't even look uncomfortable. Gimme a break!! At my hospital intervention filled birth they wouldn't even ADMIT me if I looked that relaxed.

Then they show her heading off to help with an "emergency c-section".

Geez. Can the propaganda get any worse?!??? It reminds me of the ridiculous vaccine campaigns in third world countries. I mean, God forbid we should actually do something really useful, like clean up their water and provide good sanitation for instance. :
