hi all!

my 'lil sister has finally decided that it is time to have a baby it is her first and after much discussion, i believe that she has finally broken out of the "i should get an MD, like everyone else" mode!

she has decided that this time around UC is not for her and is looking for a midwife reccomendation. anyone have a someone that they had an empowering experince with?? anyone want to name someone that she should stay away from? alas, i am not really much help to her in this matter, since she lives in albequerque, nm and i am in MO.

thanks so much, ladies, i cannot tell you how much the MDC community's support meant to me thru the preg and birth of my babe, just 4 months ago!

There has got to be many MWs in NM there is a midwife school in Taos up near Albq. The school is called The National College of Midwifery, many a wonderful midwife has trained through them. I would look in the phone book though thats your best bet. You can look up the local Yellow Pages online, or tell your sis to check them out, MWs wont be in short demand in NM.

Good luck, I hope she goes for it, I love midwives I cant stand MDs they scare me. I am having a HB with a midwife that was educated out of this college in NM.

Hi there!

I'm in ABQ and am currently planning a homebirth with a wonderful midwife I would wholeheartedly recommend -- her name is Mary-Lou Singleton and she runs Gentle Birth in Nob Hill, offering both birth center and homebirths. My prenatal experience with her has been really wonderful and I can't say enough good things about her.

ABQ has a VERY active homebirthing community, though, so there's no shortage of good homebirth midwives. The best way to find one is to ask around and get recommendations; that's what I did. Then I called several of them to get a feel for their philosophies/personality and chose the one I felt would be the best fit for me. A good way to find other homebirthing women here in town is to attend a LLL meeting or an API meeting, or check out Body, Mind and Spirit, which offers lots of prenatal/postnatal/women's health/parenting classes (and happens to share a building with my mw).

Hope that helps, and please feel free to PM me if you'd like any other info.!

Second for Gentle Birth

I am currently 30 weeks and actually, just got off the phone with Mary Lou. I can't recommend her enough. She is just the embodiment of what you want at your birth. She is kind, gentle, funny, very intelligent and you just know she loves what she does. She is confident in her role, and makes you confident in yours!
