my new CD idea

ok...i think that doing CD with Ava is too ambitious for me right now...by right now i mean this week. LOL i have to think about it a bit more. so in the meantime i think i'll start with Rowan! he's ALMOST out of diapers as it is, but he's not ready for plain old underwear. he never poops in his pants anymore but he pees a lot in them. so it's not as messy, and not as frequent...and it would let me practice.

is it stupid (waste of $$) to do this with him? i wouldn't need TONS of them, but it would be so nice to not have to drop $$$$$$$$$$$$$ on 'sposies anymore.

thoughts?

Well, you could use the diapers on Ava later whether it works out with Rowan or not, right?

disclaimer: I am totally clueless about cloth diapering.
Hmmn, that is ambitious. LOL
I wonder if he is receptive to it. My 2 yr old ds prefers cloth diapers, and I've heard it helps to potty train them quicker.

We used disposables (seventh generation) for the first month of our baby's life, and when we switched to cloth we just did it sort of slowly. Like only part of the day for the first half week. Couldn't you start out doing that for Ava?

I have a ton of large size Fuzzibunz, I could send you one with a infant prefold insert for Rowan. Just to get you started, if you decide to try it.

I switched Kearnan when he was three. I was sooo tired of buying sposies and figured I could always use them on the next baby. Of course Kearnan has special needs and now at 4.5 he is still in diapers, so I have saved a lot of money on sposies over the last 1.5 yrs. I have totally switched my stash several times, luckily cloth diapers have a great resale value. I have also bought mostly used. The biggest problems I had were with Kearnan accepting cloth. It had to be super trim and fast to use or he would wear it. We used AIO's when we first started, and now we use pockets. I will probably use the diapers he is wearing now on Tharen in a year or so. That is if Kearnan is finally out of them. Please let him potty train soon. :

My girlfriend has a son who's moving out of diapers soon. I thought it would be a great idea to use some Chinese prefolds and covers for him especially since you can get prefolds and Bummis covers for like $40 all told. It may even help a toilet ready babe to transition out of diapers because they feel the wetness (maybe). I haven't been able to convince her but I don't think it's crazy and like a pp said your younger child will definitely be able to use them so it's not a waste at all.

ok so spell it out for me, somebody. like give me links, sizes, amounts, everything very dumbed down. for my 3yo who is 44lbs and about 43" tall. does height matter? LOL but yeah, he's BIIIIG.

Uh, large Fuzzibunz won't fit your boy I think. LOL

There's the Fuzzibunz store. They sell packages.
Fuzzibunz Store

I just looked up the size info on the fuzzibunz website:
Extra Large
Weight 35+ lb
Age 3-5 yr
Thigh 14-16+

The Fuzzibunz Store also carries XXL for Youth, but there's no mention of the measurements. I think XL will fit because my boy is 35+ pounds and he has room to grow in the Large FB.

You need a large wetbag, XL Fuzzibunz, some inserts. I use prefolds as inserts for my boy just tri-folded and that works perfectly and it's cheaper than the inserts people normally use to stuff the pocket diapers. I also use a Wool soaker at night for him, over the FB or he will leak through. I don't know if Rowan pees at night still.

The thing is, well... Ava may never use XL FB. Girls tend to potty train quicker than boys and be smaller, of course. You can always resell them though.

I just started using FB on my 3yo ds. He's potty trained, but not night trained and I was SICK of buying pull ups all the time. So then I figured I'd buy him some Lg FB and when he doesn't need them anymore, we can pass them down to Samara. I got 3, since he only needs them for night time. He LOVES them and I love not buying pull ups anymore.

he does pee a lot at night...and he pees a lot during the day. LOL i think that using cloth will also help him to start realizing that it's no fun to piss in your pants. LOL

ok so i'm gonna do fuzzibunz.

i think i'll start out getting just a few and see how it goes. maybe i'll get 4 or 5.

if you go to cottonbabies.com, you get 10% off with "mothering" coupon and free shipping for your fb's. they also give you free inserts.
good luck...you will love it!

Okay I'm never one to talk someone out of cd's...but 2 problems -- Rowan is really close to PT - you may spend more $$ at this point on cloth, and #2 - Rowan is a big boy - you may have to get dipes so big they'd be hard to resell. Just my thoughts....

yeah...i keep going over this in my head and i think that i'm just in denial of the fact that i have to move to underwear. i am just DREADING the leaks and accidents i KNOW he's gonna have but he doesn't seem to care when he pees in his pullup!!AAAAGH!

Sorry I didn't get to this thread sooner - but Michelle - you can seriously save yourself some money and effort by just going straight to training pants for daytime. Rowan is old enough that he will probably get it pretty soon. Fuzzi Bunz won't let him know enough that he is wetting himself because they do such a good job of wicking away the pee. Plus, with any diaper it is hard to get the diaper on and off quickly when you are trying to get the boy on the potty!

With DS we ordered a bunch of XS good trainers from Hanna Anderson (these are all cotton and absorb a lot. DO NOT get the Gerbers - they are useless). These are small enough to fit him now (and a year ago) and big enough to take him through another year or two. We just double them up and then put a vinyl one-piece liner/cover on top (I like the Medium sized liners/covers at Babybunz.com - cheap and very nice, not plasticky at all). The doubling soaks up big pees, and the liner protects most leakage. When he stops peeing so much in his pants, you can just use a single pair as regular underpants. Plus, they are SO EASY to pull up and down when he wants to pee on the potty. Much easier than pull-ups or snap diapers, for example.

At night we are still in regular diapers though. I tried cloth for a long time, and it worked as long as I could get him on the potty in the middle of thei night. But we just have had too many leakage problems lately with DH in charge of that operation so I decided to just put him in disposables at night. Oh well...

i agree that resell on xl are not as good and you may not be able to use them on your little girl. i almost bought some xl on teh tp b/c they were cheap, but then asked about the size and i dont think Ethan will ever get that big (although he's 14 lbs. right now).
i think it would be easier starting with the babe. she doesnt walk yet, and you will have a learning curve for how to fit the dipes for when she moves around, etc. it really is easy michelle..once you get the hang of it. i was sooo scared bringing Ethan home (remember i tried cd'ing 15 years ago with prefolds and plastic pants..hated it). from the start, it was great. i was so paranoid that i would run out of diapers but i bought a ton more than i needed (and still trying to get rid of them).
if you would like to use some to see how it goes, id be happy to send you some small AIOs and small FB's...i still have some left that im trying to sell.
i really do not think about my wash...
they are different in teh sense that the clothes dont always fit, so she may go up 3+ months in size b/c they are bigger, but the fb arent that much bigger.

I agree with PP . . . the toddler I was talking about when I said it would be a good idea for you to cloth diaper is maybe 28 lbs. soaking wet and is petite. With a babe as big as yours, I don't think it would make much sense to buy any cloth diapers.

I used XL fb on Alec until he was 4+ (only at night)...now I just use

sposies for both as I was tired of cd. He was done with daytime diapers as about 2 years and 4 months but he still needs one at night at 4.5.

XL fuzzibunz work very well but you need 2 inserts. So if he is not dry at night even after he is daytime proficient...you could gets lots of use out of the FB.

Wow, he is a big boy, eh? Amalie is 4 days younger but she's slim and lanky. She's gained a bunch of height but her weight's been hovering around 29 pounds for ages.

FWIW, the switch to underwear may not be as bad as you think, especially since he's already pooping in the pot. Amalie went from never having used the potty at all to using it 100% in about a week... granted, the first few days sucked, but that was mostly because of the poop accidents. Pee accidents are minor by comparison, IMO.

ok training pants. how sad that i don't know this...but this is different than pull-ups?
Training pants are basically underwear that are absorbant. So, it's like the cloth diaper equivelant of a pull up.
