My mother had 2 homebirths, but never had anything bad to say about her hospital births. I didn't really start looking into homebirth for myself until after attending my friend's hospital birth. It was, from what I understand, pretty typical for a hospital birth for nowadays. Pitocin induction for 6 days "overdue", enema, constant EFM, no food, no moving (messes up the EFM), IV pain meds, uncaring nurses, epidural, almost flat on her back pushing, episiotomy, vaccuum extraction, people counting in her face, and a circus of people we'd never seen before that came from out of nowhere to peer at her crotch (which had spotlights pointed at it btw) while she pushed. It was awful. But seeing this birth saved me the pain of going through it myself before coming to homebirth. Thank God for showing me and for the internet and the wonderful ladies who share their birth stories here or I might've been scared off of having children forever!

Sounds like a typical hosp. birth...sad. How could someone just "accept" that? Think it's normal, and not question it? I had the hardest time reading this:

Each thing you listed was like a blow to the gut. By the time I was finished reading that part, I felt sick! It really brings tears to my eyes to think that most women (I'de like to know the percentage?) have "typical" hosp. births that are just like your friends. If that doesn't make you want to spread awareness, what would?!

Read some natural birth books that spoke about homebirth

+ my mother had my sister and myself at Pithiviers with Michel Odent in the 80s and it's like a birth centre, so I considered first going to a birth centre. But it's too expensive for us and I thought "why not at home after all"? I guess once you have a good midwife, it's easier to consider birthing at home. All the books I've read about homebirth made me realise that it was the way we mamals are supposed to give birth (in a quiet and intimate place).

With DS2 I had him in a crappy learning hospital (the only thing medicaid covers here) and they basically made me lay in the bed the entire time and they wouldn't let me get up. They refused to take the blood pressure cuff off and it was really hurting my arm. The nurse didn't even use gloves when cleaning up the bloody bedding ewwwww. THe after care was terrible, then made me stay there 3 nights and I couldn't get any rest in the uncomfortable hospital bed, they had horrible food and tiny portions (I was starving) and when I would settle down and fall asleep I would be woken up by someone checking my vitals every hour or two. Thank goodness they didn't end up putting someone else in the double room (they were going to but I basically pitched a fit)

I'll NEVER do that again!

WIth DS1 I had a pretty postive experience at a birthing center.

I put other because I always wanted to have a homebirth. My mother had me at a hospital (not such a grand experience) and my sister at home. Then she worked for a homebirth midwife and is now a CNM. I knew, from the time I was very little, that I just didn't want to be at a hospital. Then my first was a premie and I had an emergency apendectomy and after that awful, horrid delivery, I knew I would NEVER give birth in the hospital again, unless it was completely medically necessary. It was an awful, scarring experience; but my homebirths have been beautiful and I LOOOOOOVE them!
