I'll be knitting with cascade 220 on size 6 needles to achieve gauge. It leaves me a teensy bit off, but I'm knitting for an imaginary baby anyway, lol. We'll be TTC 6 mos after my weight stabalizes, so the baby will grow into it, hehehe.

What would you do to make this onesie fit a newborn-3mos size? It doesn't say the size that I can see, but it sounds like it's going to be closer to 9 month size for the hanna's onesie.

I don't think going down a needle size or two is going to make enough difference. wah!

After I finish the first color and can see how big the tube will be I'll probably be able to help you with making it smaller.

I think size 4s or 5s and sport weight yarn would do it Also, the ribbing really does make it pretty narrow so if you want to use worsted so it'll be a wool soaker for you going down a needle size should do it as well, then just don't make it as long in the torso. Once I get to the end of this color I'll be more sure.

thank you!!!

At some point, I'd like to be able to use my worsted weight cotton and still get that smaller size, but I think I have something good in wool that will work.

So, how far is everyone? Any questions yet? I'm almost ready to switch colors. I'm using grey and lavendar.

I'm still working on another project. hopefully I can pick this up this weekend

Cast-on last night with some green/blue/yellow variegated ebay-bought cotton I've been wanting to use for a year! I'm just about 15 rows in - got sleepy fast last night

My only regret is I think variegation looks a lot better on stockinette than rib, but I have enough to make something else matching in stockinette - hat probably.

anyone else knitting the onesie? You can see my progress on my blog here:
http://scottfamily.blogs.com/

QUESTION! Knitting with smaller yarn and needles is working really nicely for getting the newborn size, from the looks of it. But, when it says to knit for 12 inches, then 13 inches, I think that's going to be too long in the torso. How long do you think I should knit? I think I'll go measure a newborn onesie from crotch to armpits - that's where that 13 inches ends, I think.

Grr...I'm not super happy about the way this pattern is written...and I've been knitting for 25 years, so I'm pretty sure I'm not reading it "wrong"!

But...all my grumbling aside, I have switched colors, and have decreased for the arm holes (twice...the first time they ended up on the front and back, as opposed to the sides...the second time I did it, I did what made sense, not what the pattern says and now my arm holes are on the sides where they should be!)

Just to clarify...does everyone else think that the "front" of this thing is the short side, and the "back" is the longer side of the tube?

I still haven't started! yes, I'm lame! however..... since I may be the only one here without a kid (yet) I may catch up.
I wanted to knit it with some organic cotton, but I think i'll go with wool and use it in the winter. i hope to start this weekend!

yep, I think so, if it's at all like a "normal" onesie. And I'm not loving the pattern either, but it's not too bad yet - haven't reached the armholes.

Amy, I love the colors you're using! Looks great!

Me? welllllll ..... ...... I've wound my yarn and put that and my needles aside in a plastic baggie in my knitting basket ... but that's it

we're to get some rain this afternoon, so maybe I'll do some rainy day knitting?

Will post pics on my blog, too, as soon as I do something worth picturing

thanks Kara

So, does anyone have any suggestions for how long to make the torso of this thing for a newborn? I'm thinking 11-12" total, but even that might be too much?

Also, Grrrrr, I am seeing the problem with the pattern, Robyn, now that I'm getting ready to do arm holes. I think my place marker is in the wrong spot and it's really hard for me to figure out where to start binding off.

At least the ribbing is making it easy to count rows!

Yes...my place marker was in the "wrong" place too :!

I've come to let you all know I finished the front and back shoulder straps today, and now I understand why the author of this pattern used slubby yarn. Slubby, by it's very nature, hides alot of things that regular worsted/sport weight yarn does not. The shoulder straps have some wacky decreases in them, that stick out like sore thumbs if you aren't using slubby (which I was not). I really like the Cascade I bought for this project, and have decided that instead of using it on this project, I'm going to save it for something more appropriate. So.....I frogged (ribbit) the whole thing this afternoon, and am moving on to a different project.

When I come across a slubby I like, I'll give this one a shot again!

Adios for now R

Me too So how 'bout it Heather? Have that pattern typed up yet? (just kidding btw...I know you're overrun with children this week) Just wanted to let you know we're here when you're ready

waaah... yk, I think the increases are pretty ugly on the leg openings, too, and I was wondering if they need some kind of edge, but it would be better to just write the pattern better. This is a drag.
