a couple of weeks ago, I posted asking if anyone knew of a pattern for a lion hat.... Sarah gave me the idea of modifying a pattern from the SnB book... great idea...(she even sent me some great fun fur, which I didn't end up using - pming you about that, Sarah!)

Anyway, thought I'd share the final product.... I think it came out great!

That's really great! I'd love to hear more details on how you changed the pattern and what yarn you use.

WOW!!! I'm glad you didn't use that whimpy fun fur- because whatever it was you used for the mane is BEAUTY-LICIOUS- What did you do!? I think you did an awesome job taking that pattern and running with it! Your son looks thrilled!

Love Sarah

Trishy- what I did was use the snb pattern for the cowl neck scarf. I used iceland wool by crystal palace in "oat" for the body. I did a swatch to figure out how many stitches to cast on, but I overestimated (didn't account for stretch so it was way too big at first.) I re-started, this time casting on 56 stitches. I knit a round, purled a round, knit, purled, then knit a few rounds until I thought it would be a good place to start the mane. I used a double-strand - iceland wool in "tree bark" and a fun fur that I found - I can't remember the name but will find out if anyone is interested - and did a single loop stitch. Did that for 3 rounds, then switched back to the straw color and knit until I thought it was long enough, ending with a few rounds of ribbing. I knit the ears separately, using Sarah's suggestion... I cast on 12, st st for 2 rows, next row I knit 1, psso, knit to the last three stitches then k2t and knit1. I decreased in this way every row until I had four stitches, then bound off. I secured the ears to the hat and it was done

Next I'm going to make him the unicorn hat from New Knits on the Block...he's fascinated with unicorns. (my fault after buying him the CHEESIEST unicorn movie - the theme song is song by America. That gives you a hint of just how 70's cheese-a-licious this movie is. My son walks around singing 'I'm ALIIIIIVEEEE...I'm the LAAAAAAST Unicorn..... ALIIIIIIVVVEEEE...'
