Yoga Tribe! - Page 4

Hi yogi moms! I just found this thread. I hope your teaching is going well, lunarforest. I love yoga and have been practicing a long time- used to teach. Once you start teaching a class and word spreads, it fills up. My first teaching job was at a health club and 4 students showed up. Within a few months, I had to add a second class because there was literally no room for everyone- so we added a gentle class afterwords. That was packed, too. That seemed to be trend -- you go along with a few and slowly build up, then it gets too crowded and people don't like that and it drops off- then builds up again...

It was pretty much the same at the yoga center except when I inherited ongoing classes that had people already coming to that time slot. Then some left because they didn't like the way I taught and other came because they loved the way I taught. You can never please everyone, only be yourself and go with that.

Motherhood is my yoga now- haven't taught except subbing in 4 years. we finished a small room in the basement that is my yoga and meditation room. I still practice every day- also do tai chi- yang short form less often but have been doing that for about 11 years.

Good Evening, newbie (well, sort of ) here

Hello! I have really enjoyed reading all of your posts here and am very excited to have found this "tribe".

I, very much the novice, have expreimentented with yoga, tai chi, and pilates - each of these pre and post baby. I really enjoy all of these. Now that my son is almost 9 months old I am looking to try and implement some type of regular routine/ritual. We have the "Baby and Me" video that we do together, but I am looking for something more, much more than this to add in each day.

I am looking for some input as to what type of yoga might be best for me and my situation. During my pregnancy I had problems with asthma and other pulmonary issues; my lung capacity pretty much hoovered around 40% for the duration. Now that our fabulous fella is here, things were expected to get back to "normal". But, my lung capacity is staying in the mid to high 50% range. Needless to say this limits my capacity for exercise and the levels of activity that I can comfortably / safely perform. (That's me, panting, after walking the short distance down our sloped driveway to the mail box. Can you imagine what I look each day while chasing our very active son around?!)

I have talked with my pulmonologist and he agrees that some type of yoga, tai chi, or pilates would not only be a "do-able" exercise, but might assist in building or even simply maintaing my lung capacity.

Any suggestions as to which avenue of yoga I should venture in to? It needs to be something that I can do on my own or by video here in my home (I don't see being able to go to a studio and take a class as a viable option). Too, take into consideration the fact that I am very much the novice at yoga. Until now, I have pretty much toyed with the art. In another words I am tight, far from limber. And I am very much in the need of productive yet relaxing time each day.

Sorry for my babbling. Thanks for any assistance or support you might be able to give us (my son and husband will also be grateful! : ).

hello, I just found this thread! Im always too rushed to look at other pages in each forum but tonight I am really relaxed and looking for other things.
so, I've been doing yoga for 6 yrs now, mostly started with one class soon after my first born ( ok, well i think he was like 6 months) then, it was up and down as far as frequency and committment. In the last yr. Ive become more committed and actually have been slowly working toward my teachers cert!
i really think Yoga is my path. When I was young I absolutely loved to stretch and do poses (didnt know it had a name) and it was only recently that i made that connection to how I felt as a "kid" about movement in this way and now. Yoga IS like magic to me--- as someone way back said.

Hello all! I had no idea there was a yoga thread here (of course, I don't spend much time in FYT).

I've just recently started yoga (although after reading some of your posts, I wonder if I'm really doing it "right"). I have a yoga DVD - "Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss" - and have been doing it fairly regularly for about a month, now. I love it!! I feel so good after I finish, and on the days when I'm not able to find time for it, I definitely miss it.

I've been working some of the poses into my day-to-day life, too. I'm just so amazed at how quickly I've become more limber. I've never been a limber person, and so really didn't think yoga would be my "thing". But I'm really enjoying it.

We have one yoga studio here in town. I haven't checked prices for classes there yet, but probably will look into it this fall.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi!

I have made a commitment to myself to try and do yoga daily. I've been pretty good for the last few weeks, but I'd love to get some feedback from everyone. I have a really hard time concentrating on my body and breath when I practice at home vs. in a class. I tend to enjoy Iyengar yoga for it's detail-oriented perspective and love the feedback I get from the instructor. It always makes me focus more deeply within myself. But when I try and practice at home (usually daily for about 45 minutes) I am lucky to keep my mind on track for more than 1 minute. How do you keep focused? Are there any tips from you other yoga mamas?

mariposita: My thought is that when one is trying to watch and listen to the tape we are in a different thinking "mode" ,if you will, Than when In a personal and real situation. I've noticed this myself when I am at home watching. I think it has something to do with the way we think when watching t.v. -a lot of our perceptions are filtered out. does that make sense???? When I am in Class, I can sense What is goin on around me, the peripheral and the other students-- This helps me. The mood also help- the atmosphere- the energy is contagious. Also, When you learn enough and intergrate it into your self you can begin to remember the cues, the aligngments and not watch anything but your self from inside.
does this help?

It's great to find this thread! I've been practicing yoga for 4-5 years, and am pursuing teacher certification. I practice daily, and so do my 2yo and 4yo. I usually practice solo (no video or class), although it hasn't always been so. I attended classes for a couple years (3 different teachers) and I have a large library of videos. I'm a good person to ask about yoga videos.

I really like Ujayi breathing. To me, it sounds like the wind in the trees, but it is coming from me. Every time my thoughts invade, I gently dismiss them, and listen to my wind again.

Joining in here too! I might say I am on a bit of a yogic dry spell... I recently (last year) lost a whole lot of weight, and I have been adding in cardio and weight training to my life to tone and keep the weight off. But I am slowly incorporating my yoga back in as well.
I have practiced yoga off and on for about 10 years, and even as I am typing, I realize that it is a bigger part of my life than I thought! I clear out our living room almost every day and my kids and I get on the floor and practice. (What is it with kiddos and downward dog??? lol)
I am also a Christian and using my time practicing yoga has been a whole other dimension to meditation and quiet time.

So, as always, life is changing, moving, and growing! I am just enjoying the ride!

Thanks Laura and Whit for your suggestions on how to center myself. I actually do solo practices, rather than with a video. That could be just the kind of instruction that would actually HELP me focus since that is what I enjoy most about classes.

I will have to remind myself to focus on my breath each time I let my mind wander. That visualization of the wind and the trees really helps. I'm a visual person. I also think that I need to find a time earlier in the day (preferably before everyone else gets up) to practice. Right now I'm doing it at night when DH puts DS to bed (my only free time). I can hear his babbling and occasional screams in the background (he HATES going to bed. LOL). Not the most peaceful environment possible.

Hey! I think I might belong on this thread too! My dh is a pretty serious yogi, and lately, within the last four months, I've started to take classes with his teacher. She is a teacher in the Iyengar tradition. I practice with my dh four or five nights a week after the baby is asleep, and go to class on Sundays. I am very excited because this past week, I learned to do headstand!

We generally practice starting around 9:30 or 10 PM. I was working until about a month and a half ago, and so my yoga didn't make much progress--I was always too tired. This last six weeks, I feel like yoga has gotten so much easier! I get more sleep and I spend a lot of my day with the baby, walking around in the sunshine.

I have to say, it's very cool to practice with my dh. He is an advanced student and a good teacher, and he really loves it that I am sharing this with him. My only issue as a yogini is that I'm not very good at accepting my body the way it is. I wish I were slimmer, more limber, stronger. But I'm working on that part. It helps to gain access to a big thing like the headstand.
Huh.....now I am wondering if I really do belong here - it sounds like everyone else is much more experienced/advanced! I'm working on it!

captain optimism (love your name, BTW) - I wanted to say that though I've only been practicing yoga for about a month, just in the last two weeks I can suddenly see BIG changes in my body!! It's amazing - things are clicking for me and I'm so much more limber (and strong!). Also, I can see a visual change in my belly (can barely see the change here, as I've got plenty of "insulation" in that area) and my legs.

I know my posture is better, which can contribute to looking slimmer, but also helps me FEEL better throughout the day.

BUT, it didn't happen until I quit caring about it and just started enjoying/immersing myself in the yoga. Things just clicked (which is often the way it works for me - I just have to relax my control and let myself go)!

You can certainly tell me to shove off, since I'm such a yoga newbie :LOL, I just wanted to jump in there.

Hello mamas.

As I explained here we are trying to redirect many of the tribe threads that have been placed here for purposes of discussion that belong on the existing forums for that topic.

So I'm moving this thread to Personal Growth where yoga is most appropriately hosted. If for some reason you feel Fitness and Nutrition would be a better place for it just let me know.

Please bear with us as we try to work through this and thanks so much for your understanding and appreciation.

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I wanted to announce my arrival. I have been practicing for four years. but, I haven't been regular. I've only taken two classes. Mostly I have read books and tried to follow that way, which is often frustrating, and not very inspiring. I would love to take classes but have not been able to afford it. Any video suggestions? I am not so much a power yoga type. I like when the spiritual aspects are part of the focus.
Also I will have some money coming to me and was considering spending it on classes for the year, or putting it toward a teacher training, basically so I practice correctly and without need of classes. what training programs have people done and what are your thoughts on them. Are there any where my family could come for the duration of the training?
many blessings

hi Jenny! welcome! Ive Used Gaim videos That include Rodney Yee and Others. They have a "library" that has a selection of relaxation types , flexibility, strength and meditations. I love these. One thing you might want to look into is www.Yogajournal.com. There is a lot there that is helpful, including a directory of places to practice.
Im in the middle of working on my 200 hr certification and take workshops about once a month at a certified studio. It will be another year, unless of course, I lengthen it to be the 600 hr cert. It's quite costly to me; anywhere from $60 for one day workshops to $200 for a weekend workshop/two days.
This is working for me as I get to get away for hrs at a time.

>> heres a site from a healing communtiy based in NY with a center in Texas that offers a whole lot of retreats and workshops, including a family week in August (others Here may be interested Also ) www.eomega.org
Good luck and come back and join us again
