Machine recs?

dh and I are looking for a machine, we don't have a lot of $$ (almost got a Brother w/ zig-zag stitch off ebay for $36)

Where could we pick up a good machine for a good deal? What kind of machine?

Im interested in making pouches for friends, and possibly mama cloth as well as reparing our clothing.

Check with your local sew n vac, to see if they've got some used machines. If you buy it there, instead of eBay, you'll know it's in good repair. If you buy off eBay, chances are you'll have to take it in for a tune up sooner or later, anyway, because who knows what sort of condition the thing is in at that point.

What about craigslist, freecycle or thrift stores. I've gotten 2 machines from freecycle...so the cost was nada and they are awesome vintage machines. I have a singer 503a rocketeer vintage machine from I think the 60's, it's all metal inside and out. I've done all the maintenance myself. I joined some vintage machine groups and they are so helpful. The machine is a real workhorse and it can plow through most anything. It'll be here long after I'm gone. I plan on giving it to my dd. I say if you look around and look to the past you can find some really great machines for so little. Good luck.
