What should I make first?

Hi mamas! It's my birthday and I got a sewing machine!

I. AM. SO. EXCITED!!!!

But, I have no idea what to make. I really want to make a pouch sling at some point and some t-shirts and baby legs too. Any suggestions for something simple I should start with? I'm assuming before I begin any project, I should just play around a bit with my machine, right?

Anything with straight lines is a good place to start. Definitely try out your machine on some scrap fabric to get the feel for it.

Some easy projects:

cloth napkins
tote bags
pillows

I agree, things with straight lines. My first few projects were pillows, followed by a simple block baby quilt, after I got a machine quilting book that made it simple. And then I branched into diapers. A pouch sling is actually pretty easy to make and there are free directions on line- sorry I don't have a link right now.
