smocking? shirring? (whatever it's called...)

here's a picture: http://images.redcatsusa.com/images/...1_57120_dt.jpg.

That looks like such a cute and easy top to make. I thought I had seen fabric like that sold somewhere by the yard. But I can't remember where. Do you think I could use elastic thread and do it w/my machine? Any ideas??

Yep, you can do it with your machine. Hand wind your bobbin with elastic thread and keep regular thread in your needle. Straight stitch and it'll bunch up as you go along. You can steam it after you're done sewing and it will bunch up even more.

I haven't tried it yet but it is one of my many projects I have planned for this Spring. I found this sewalong while researching: http://www.amitymama.com/vb/sewing-m...light=shirring HTH!

Thanks for the link, scrapadoozer! Shirring is on my "learn how to do" list too.

You might check out your machine manual as well. I've never tried it, but this is one of the many heirloom stitches that my machine has. It can even do interesting diamond shirring, etc.

Well I finally got my elastic thread (and 10 yards of new fabric! LOL!!)!! Now I just need to find the time to sew. I'm dying to try this!

That same sew-a-long was one of my first shirring projects. One of my first sewing projects, actually!

have pattern, will shirr...

I'd love to try this technique. I have a pattern for a camisole top similar to the one in the AmityMama.com tutorial mentioned above, so here's my question: does the shirring change the size? As in, should I make the next bigger size camisole to accommodate the shirring? Does that make sense?

It is soooo easy. Really,

Shirring - I think it is called, because smocking is pleats that you then hand-embroider (no?) - a LOT more work.

I have done shirring a lot on kids tops, and the only think I recommend (other than French seams) is tying the ends.
