I, too had the Dept of Human Services/CPS nosing around in my household-but then, EVERYONE in my low-income housing complex did. I believed it was discrimination against the poor. And DHS/CPS aren't frightened by poor people because we can't afford the good lawyers. I was so pleased to move out of the apartments, and guess what, DHS hasn't bothered us since.

When my fiance' and i get pregnant, i will play along with medical exams (YUCK) but i will keep the UC info quiet to those out of my support circle. It just seems safer

my heart goes out to this family and i pray that CPS will get their heads outta their a$$e$ and give the baby back to his/her loving parents

update before i go to bed they were hoping to have a court date for tomorrow, but since I haven't heard I am guessing they haven't gotten one (at least not yet *fingerscrossed*) so if not tomorrow then not until monday.... : ( I am hoping to picket cps tomorrow anyways.... keep praying, please!

That is horrible. I've heard stories of moms getting CPS called on them, but the cases always get closed because in order to have grounds to take the baby they have to prove that birth is inherently dangerous or that the parents neglected INJURIES following the event.
They can't do the first, so I feel like there's something missing from this. :-/

that is sooooooooo awful!!

For our next birth (not even TTC yet) I'm planning a home birth with a midwife, and this seals my decision to not tell anyone. i will just tell them I'm going thru the freestanding birth center where we went for DD. I don't trust that noone would report it and in the state we will hopefully living in at the time, homebirth midwives aren't lisenced even tho the one we will use even has doctor backup. But I'd hate for CPS to be involved! UGh!

This story makes me sick.

I wish that little family much strength, power, and energy to get their precious child back, and set CPS straight! I agree with writing in to local papers... awareness needs to be raised about the truth of unassisted birth, or this will continue to happen.

Ugh....This is just soo soo SO wrong on every level!: Scary too..
The poor family..They are in my thoughts..Please keep us updated..
One by one it seems our rights in this free country are being stripped from us.

Just a little FYI, The police, CPS, military..whatever government agency you are dealing with.. they WILL NOT tell you your true rights. It is YOUR responsibility to get informed and learn them, then fight for them. If you don't fight for your rights, you really don't have any. These people love scaring, bullying people into doing things their way and convincing them to give up their rights.

My heart goes out to thast family and the sweet baby. Now that they know their rights, I hope they fight like hell to get back their right to parent their child.

Where in WA did this happen? Sounds like the local media needs to know about this. It is absolutely outrageous!

Can you give any more details? How can I help - I most certainly can write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper/to CPS/etc. but I'd need more details.

yup. expecting a CPS worker to care about parental rights....well, i can't come up with good enough metaphor to show how absurd that would be...

I've been thinking about this family all weekend. Any news?

This is so reminiscent of what happened to us. Only with one worker, not even cops...First it was to see for himself that the baby was alive and well appearing healthy and left with "get the baby checked out by a Dr. soon" "ok" and then the next morning it was a phone call saying "I talked to my supervisor and you have to meet us at the ER right now or else we'll come take the baby to the hospital ourselves" I was terrified thinking they were trying to trap us and take Liam away from us at the hospital. Thank goddess the triage nurse was an ANGEL and the Dr was blase.

I luckily had a family friend who was a lawyer, I was ready to call him - but we sure didn't have two nickles to rub together. This is how I am sure CPS likes to pick on poorer folk. It's too easy for them.

And no they will not tell you your rights. Probably not even if you asked.

I'm waiting for an update! I hope that mama is able to get her baby back soon. Imagine a newborn not being able to be comforted by its mama, nursing and getting formula instead! Yuck!

This story gives me chills! I'm sending much love to the family and it breaks my heart to think that little baby is ALONE from mama & papa, OMG!!!! Please, please keep us updated or how if any we can help.....

As a small aside I am planning a UC in this same community - we will be keeping our mouths shut about it esp. in re: to this issue. I won't be telling baby's medical people (when we get to baby care at the Dr.s) that we UC'd... it should never be a choice other people mess with (does anyone freak legally when someone chooses a repeat cesarean without trying a VBAC? Same type of choice) and it is absolutely scary that they would think they have legal right. I hope that when they do get the court date (I'm guessing Mon. too Tuckersmom (are you keeping updated at MAMAS? Tamy?) - were you planning to picket on that date (court date)?) that the judge absolutely puts CPS in their place re: what is ok and what is not.

It makes me nervous, just the possibility of having to deal with CPS and my birth choices, and that is not right. This poor family is being made an example and I hope it's thrown back in CPS' faces - it is such a misguided, fearful use of resources and effort. :sigh:

Funny, what freedoms do we really have in this 'free' country?

: I can't believe what I am reading? How can they do this? And they think they are acting in the best interest of the child by taking dc away from mom and dad. This poor family, I hope they get dc back soon.
