Can't get Aplix locally...will velcro be ok?

I'm going to use the darling diapers pocket diaper pattern to learn diaper making with and I want to use aplix as it's so highly recommended by both the pattern and elsewhere, but literally no where in town has it, or "touch tape" or anything other then velcro. I want to start making a diaper tomorrow, I got everything else I needed today, except a fastener....can I use velcro or is the one side just too scratchy? If there is a type of velcro that will be ok, what should I get? Thanks for any advice you can give

My concern with velcro, in addition to the scratchiness, would be its strength in holding the diaper shut.

I don't know what your situation is, but if you could just sew your diaper up to the last step of sewing on the aplix, and wait a few days for some aplix to come in, you'll be glad down the road. Having diapers rip open every time your baby inhales will be frustrating, to say the least!

Oh, and unfortunately, that's pretty common with diaper-making supplies - gotta go online to find the good stuff.

If you need the diapers TOMORROW, velcro will do until you can get some aplix to replace it... it's a bit of a waste of money and extra work to take it off to put the aplix on, but it'll get you by. You will need to put aplix on them eventually though because velcro will NOT last at all.. it will wear out very quickly so unless you want to replace your velcro once every few weeks, you'll need aplix eventually.

But if I recall, you're still pregnant, right? What I would do personally (and what I did do) is as long as you are not making pocket diapers (not prefold pockets but fitted pockets), or putting fancy tabs on the wings, is you can sew the whole rest of the diaper and just sew on the aplix when it arrives in the mail, which won't be TOO long My diapershop orders usually arrive in about a week if it's a small order.

If you can't do that according to your pattern, I would tough it out and wait. I know it's hard But you don't want to put velcro on a diaper in a way that you'll have to take apart the whole thing if (when) you have to replace it.

Hang in there - I know how hard it is to resist until you can start! I feel ya!

Thanks for the advice, I will force myself to be patient...ok, not patient, but I'll make myself wait...I think I will go ahead and go as far as I can with the pattern til it comes in..with a toddler running around, it may just take all week!

Off to place an order.....

Don't use velcro! You will regret it! Not only does it not work very well, it costs about seven times as much! Plus you will waste a bunch of the hook side that you won't use. OSDS is very fast, I'm in boise and I usually get shipments within 2-3 days.

i'll advice you to wait. my osds order came in 4 days. took me longer to get my diapers ready.

Definitely don't use velcro. That's all I've used on my dipes so far and it sucks. They come apart in the wash and all stick together (despite the laundry tabs) and I paid over $5 for each YARD. You can get touchtape or aplix for so much cheaper, even retail. The velcro is so bad that it is fraying my dipes b/c its grabbing the ends when in the wash. Sucks. I won't be making that mistake again. Oh, and they come apart on my kids so I'm forever putting diapers back on.
