The youngest son decides he wants to have a bar mitzvah so he goes about trying to convince his parents. Late in the episode they meet with the Rabbi and explain that Mike didn't have a bris though he was circumcized because, as the dad says "we didn't want to leave him with a turtleneck."




Sometimes I really think that "harmless" jokes like this just exacerbate nasty rumors and myths around serious issues.

I was so hoping they were going to say they hadn't circumcised him. Grr. It was such a great opportunity, and instead they went for the lame joke.

that show is rediculous, i remember reading in entertainment or some other stupid mag that reviewed it, all about its attempt at edgy humour just being tasteless, ignorant, pitiful attempts to get a laugh.

so yeah, not surprised in the least, that show is really bad on its own anyway.

So strange, it's on right now and was at this exact part when I read this post!!!

The dad also makes some joke, telling the rabbi, "I don't know what to tell you rabbi, we can't cut the ribbon twice." ...haha

The Rabbi goes on about needing to draw blood from his penis for a ceremonial bris and the dad tells the rabbi, "Come on rabbi, I'll get the knife and hold him down, we can do it right now!" when the boy freaks out and is refusing...He also goes on and on about how he went through it, his father went through it before him, etc, etc. trying to pressure him saying, "You're DOING it!" and the boy says, "NO, I'M NOT!" and walks out.

Glad he didn't have to be cut twice, but what a crappy commentary.

I haven't heard of the show - but my immediate thought is that IRL I'd rather be seen wearing a turtleneck than an army helmet.

I actually really enjoy that show but I missed it tonight. That would have made me mad to hear the circ comments

My dh was telling me about it last night he watches the show all the time. I dont care for it myself. The Father character gets on my nerves. I couldnt get that turtlenet comment out of my head. Wish dh had kept his mouth shut. He also mentioned that I would prolly be hearing about it here so he wanted to let me know what it was about. I have been expecting to hear about it sooner or later on that show because of the father

I usually love this show, so that pissed me off. I could see it coming, but I had a small moment of hope when she said he had no bris, that maybe he wasn't cut and they were going to have this whole discussion about not circing, but guess not.

Yeah I really thought that they would go for the "he isn't circ'd" angle and make it about him keeping his foreskin...but nope. Instead it was just about nothing. Too bad. And that really could have been just as funny or funnier. Unfortunatly in our society it probably is more realistic that he was done to "match daddy".

I like the show too. Usually makes me laugh. And thank goodness for a new sitcom finally. So sick of reality and crime drama.

The mother did have one comment...

After seeing the show and the scene... there was one hopeful spot that I think a lot of people missed.

After the boy said "no way, I'm not doing that".... His mother had this to say about the idea of a knick to draw blood from her son's penis: (not an exact quote, but it was close to this:

"Come on Jimmy, i mean, it's had worse done before"


[I'm going to try and find a script online or something to get the quote right.]


She openly admits that he's had worse done... ARRGGGGGGGGGGGg

I thought she said "you've done worse to it", which I took to mean "rough handling" (you know how little boys are).

Trying to put a (somewhat) positive spin on this.....

I turned this show on right before this scene, and when the Rabbi said that he would need to do the bris, I too was hoping that he wasn't circed yet, and that would be the big topic. Of course, it turned out that he was circed, and the father was being an idiot/ jerk about it (off color jokes, etc).

The way I see it... yes, it was dissapointing that they weren't more agressive in condemning circumcision. BUT the kid did forcefully refuse and walked out of the room, at the thought of even drawing a "little blood".

Perhaps instead of outright slamming this episode, perhaps we can use it to our advantage... something along the lines of...

"See the parents were pushing him to be circumcised for rediculous reasons and the kid (who btw is quite possibly the only rational one on the show) saw through the lame excuses and didn't want anyone simply drawing blood from his penis. I bet if he was given the choice as a baby, he wouldn't have wanted a whole peice of his penis cut off, and he would have been even more forceful about it."

Yep, that's why it's done at 8 days old instead of 12 years old.

I do agree, and wonder how they'll handle this in the future (as it was left unresolved).
