Cavities in four front teeth from night nursing

Yesterday morning my husband and I took our son to see a
dentist. I was shocked when the dentist told us
that our child has advanced cavities on his 4 front teeth
and will require dental work under anesthesia. I
could not believe what I was hearing. Apparently, all that nursing at night caused serious cavities.
The dentist explained that not all breast fed babies
get cavities at such young age, but some do and I
should stop nursing him in bed. I guess pediatric cavities are preventable if caught at an early
stage. But since my son's cavities at the advanced
stage, even if I stop nursing now, they will
progress and cause an infection and damage to his
permanent teeth. If I do nothing, the teeth would
have to be extracted in a few month.
I don't know what to do. The thought of my son
being under anesthesia terrifies me. If anyone had a similar experience, please share
it with me. I will seek a second opinion, and
hopefully find an alternative to drilling under general anesthesia.

Last week ds2 had his cavities filled while sedated. I do not believe for a second that nursing caused this or your baby's cavities. Do a search on kellymom for tooth decay, there are a few interesting articles.
