I am making dd a sundress, with a zipper. I need to trim the zipper, but can't figure out what side to cut? Do I trim the bottom off, or the top????

Trim the bottom. First close the zipper, then stitch around the zipper with strong thread a bunch of times about an inch above where you are going to cut, then cut.

Yep, cut the bottom. If you cut the top there won't be anything to stop the zipper from sliding right off the top.

I cut the top off, but after I sew it in. I buy them long on purpose when I make skirts and dresses. By leaving the extra at the top when I sew it in, I can put the slide all the way up out of the way, then I don't have to sew around it. After I sew the zipper in, I open it up, trim each side about 3/4 inch above where the zipper should end, fold the zipper tape down and over to the side and tack it down. If there is a facing or lining, put the end underneath. If there is a binding, put the end under the binding to secure it, no need to tack it to the side.

You can also sometimes pry off the metal stops at the top ends and replace them lower down. It really depends on the zipper and the placement, and your sewing skills
