We generally try to keep DD from carrying food all over the house. And we don't allow her to jump around and play and run while eating due to increased choking risks. We also have a dog who helps clean up after her.
But we're pretty relaxed about whether she has to stay at the table. She doesn't like her booster anymore and won't use one at a restaurant either. So basically we just have her sit on her bum or her knees (table is a little high) while she eats. She's pretty wiggly. Personally I don't have much of a problem with her moving around as long as she isn't bothering other people (such as at a restaurant).
My DH's family is really laid back about eating habits and manners. My own parents used to make us ask to be excused before we were allowed to get up. I'd prefer somewhere in the middle. So, I've told my DH that I feel bad if he just gets up and leaves while I am still having dinner and he doesn't do that anymore. But with DD, I don't make her stay at the table. If she's totally not interested in eating, sometimes I'll let her go play or look at a book or something just so I can eat my food without added distractions and have 10 minutes for adult conversation with DH.
Usually for lunch or snacks, I'll sit down with DD at her little table and she usually sits there for the entire meal or snack.
