How long until I am a hyena quality diaper sewer?

Okay I got time not pregnant with fourth yet...
So I thought hey how hard could rolling out a newborn layette set be?
But for those farther ahead on the curve....(I am a decent seamstress, have access to serger, will buy snap press when I get more flow)
how many diapers would it take you or time dedicated before your diapers would be indistinguishable from a hyena?

I think I was probably about your sewing level, and it took me about 15-20 diapers to get really good. I'd also never used a serger though, so I had that part of the learning curve to play with. Also, if I was only using one pattern, it may have taken less, but I'm switching between three patterns. I just made the first one that I consider almost-perfect last night (one tiny flaw that even DH couldn't find ), but my last several I've been really proud of. I use Aplix, I don't intend to buy a snap press, so I compare mine to pictures of other Aplix diapers.

I don't know. All I can say is that I am totally impressed with the sewing skills of some of the diaper makers out there. I consider myself to have some pretty good sewing skills. I've been sewing all my life. I am new to serging. But even so, I've made probably 15 - 20 diapers and don't think I could sell them. I am a perfectionist though. Don't get me wrong, they are pretty good and perfect for my DD. I'm having lots of fun doing it, they fit her perfectly, and making diapers from $2/yard flannel from Joann's with some hemp in the middle is MUCH cheaper than buying hyena diapers. I use Aplix too. My last couple of diapers have been pretty darn good, but I just can't seem to get around the tight curves on my tabs with my serger without the stitching getting too close together or some other wacky thing. They're just not "perfect".

I think it takes more than great sewing to be hyena quality, honestly. The hyena diapers that I am thinking of take a well-sewn basic diaper and raise it above the ordinary with an awesome fit for a wide range of babies, creative embellishments, luxurious fabrics, extraordinary sewing techniques or some combination thereof.

Don't get me wrong, I love the beauty of a well-sewn diaper and I appreciate the talent and hard work it takes to sew one. But hyena quality, IMO, is something a little bit more. But that is part of what I find exciting about sewing my own diapers. I won't pay for hand-dyed outers, but I will do it myself . I learn a new skill and save a bundle.

Oh absolutely, I agree! When I said I consider myself almost but not quite hyena quality, I was speaking of my sewing and construction alone. I enjoy being creative with fabrics, but I don't use really awesome fabrics (like Minkee) or do embroidery on my dipes. I couldn't sell them for anywhere near what hyena dipes command, but I'm happy with them for my own babe, and that's all that matters!

good to know, I don't intend on selling diapers just wondering how long it would take me before I didn't look at one of my diapers and go...shuddah just bought some!
