Want to make a 1 layer wool cover....help please!

How can I go about making a nice wool (waterproof)cover to use as in place of a PUL cover, but that fits just like a regular diaper? In other words, I don't want it to look or fit like the one here:

How would I go about putting elastic around the legs and back to make it fit well? Would FOE work (if this is something that would work, how would I go about doing it, I've never worked with FOE before?)

Or should I just use a cover pattern and use wool instead of the PUL they call for (something I don't really want to do unless the wee one turns out allergic to wool and needs the fabric barrier)?

Hi Amy (do I know you from Ovusoft?) here is what I posted in another thread:

I adopted the pocket method of leaving a flap of fabric where the elastic will go and folding it over. Basically, I used the pattern for my fitted diapers and cut the wool from this out of a sweater (since I will have no seam allowance, it makes it a bit bigger than the diaper). You could add 1/2" to your diaper pattern all the way around if needed. At the legs and back where I wanted elastic, I just cut out and around those areas leaving a 3/4" or so flap. Then, I sewed my elastic down as usual, and then covered it with the flap and sewed the flap down, being careful not to catch any of the elastic.

Oh, I almost forgot. My machine has an overedge stitch and so that is what I did all around the edges, since this was a 1-layer cover. I used 100% polyester thread so it wouldn't wick.

I'm quite proud of myself for this wrap! Here are a couple pics:

Well lots of conflicting advice on this forum re F.O.E on wool,some say do ,some say it goes yacky with lanolin.......

How I have done my fave one is by using knitted wool,in two layers applyiny lastin to the top layer,like a fitted serged dipe,then t and t ing it!
But with wool clothDISCO JOY does nifty binding round hers ,made from bias cut lighterwieght wool cloth,from skirts and stuff,I do belive that wool binding does exsist too,if one can get hold of it!

Thanks ladies! Joni, that cover looks great...I think I'll try that once I get my hands on some wool. I was thinking I wanted to stay away from FOE for some reason, thanks Jayne

I just saw that this coop has wool binding:
This is a coop for wool binding. It looks just like Fold Over Elastic,
except that it is 100% boiled wool, so there is no elastic in it. It is nice and soft. It is 1" flat,
1/2" folded over. A 10" piece will stretch to 11". It comes in Navy. It is
1.00 per yard + shipping to you.

It's pretty easy and it looks nice, and I get the wool for cheap at the thrift store.

Leaving extra fabric for a flap sounds like the quickest and easiest way, plus you don't have to go digging around for extra wool fabric somewhere.
If your cover is pretty thick, though, you might want to avoid folding it over, and just use a separate binding instead. Plus I think that the finished look of binding on the edge looks nice. But I don't think you can go wrong, as long as you somehow get the elastic to stay in there!

BTW, don't forget to assess the stretchiness of your wool. The stretchier the fabric, the bigger the wrap will seem. If it is not stretchy at all, you'll want to compensate by cutting it out even larger.
