breastfeeding and target

Thread Starter
just passing this on from the LLL fourms!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Target has a new annoying shirt, for those of you who remember the epidural
shirt. This one (linked below with commentary) depicts a baby bottle with
the words Formula 4 Success. Please consider following the links and letting
Target know how you feel:

Be sure to pass this onto everyone you know who would be interested!

My letter

Quote:
I'd like to ask that your stores consider selling Breastfeeding advocacy clothing if you intend to sell such merchandise as this: http://birthactivist.com/formula4success.jpg . It would be even better if you pulled this off the rack, it's a well known fact that breastfed babies have higher IQs. Having your brand name on such an item is a big turnoff for me, perhaps I will do my shopping elsewhere in the future.
Last time I contacted them (re: the big formula ads), I got a really moronic response. We'll see this time...

The onesie displaying a picture of a bottle and reading "formula 4 success" is highly offensive! Additionally, it is incorrect. Formula is not the best food for baby. Breastmilk is, by far, superior and should be considered the first choice. However, because of our culture and products like the onesie described, it is often overlooked because formula is seen as 'just-as-good' and is usually more readily accepted. I request this product's removal from the sale's floor of Target.

Here's my letter:

I'd like to ask that your stores consider selling Breastfeeding advocacy clothing if you intend to sell such merchandise as this: http://birthactivist.com/formula4success.jpg . Better yet, pull this off the rack. Studies show that breastfed babies have higher IQs. In addition to violating the WHO Code regarding the marketing of breastmilk substitutes (http://www.breastfeedingtaskforla.org/WHOcode.htm), having your brand name on such an item makes me seriously consider doing my shopping elsewhere.

I sent a letter, but since then I've learned that there is another shirt that says "Need a bottle, Fo Shizzle!" Its funny, but points at the same thing. When will they learn?

Their response was so lame! If I were you, I'd reiterate how they broke the WHO code which you already pointed out to them and which they completely neglected to mention in their response. Perhaps you need to copy and paste point #4 for them as they obviously did not go to the web site to read it...

ugh

ugh, I was there today...walking mostly, did about 6000 steps lol... but really, that's a ridiculous shirt... sent a letter... looks like the response you got was so canned... ugh!!!

my letter:

I am appalled to see such shirts as your "forumla for success" and "need a bottle fo shizzle" shirts. In a world where new mothers are constantly mislead to believe that formula nd breastmilk are equal, you are perpetuating that myth, that LIE. In addition, you are breaking the world health organization's code regarding the marketing of breastmilk substitutes (http://www.breastfeedingtaskforla.org/WHOcode.htm). Why not take the healthier route and promote breastmilk... www.promom.com has 101 reasons why breastmilk is better-- thats 101 different T-shirts to your one or two crappy t-shirts promoting formula. Seeing how ignorant your marketing of such a product is is disgusting, and a disgrace to your company.

I was in Target two nights ago and noticed the very shirt you're talking about~ I couldn't believe it! How sad This is why new mothers are seeing ff'ing as the norm...

always start with a compliment. . . .

Sent a letter:

I have been a big fan of your stores since you first opened in Connecticut. I respect your efforts toward providing a good working environment for your employees and maintaining ethical business standards that other superstores (i.e., WalMart) gleefully ignore. I LOVE that you carry eco-friendly products and a wide selection of merchandise.

However, regarding the "Formula 4 Success" clothing, I would like to express my dismay that you have chosen to carry a product that promotes such an unhealthy attitude. Carrying this product also goes directly against the World Health Organization's code regarding the marketing of breastmilk substitutes.

The International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes was established in 1981 and places restrictions on the marketing of breast milk substitutes, such as infant formula, to ensure that mothers are not discouraged from breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is an unequalled means of providing ideal nutrition and immune protection for infants. The Code forbids virtually all forms of advertisements and marketing methods for breast milk substitutes, especially against advertisements claiming health benefits from the substitutes, and many countries around the world have incorporated this code into their own legal structure. Failure to abide by this code has also led to international boycotts of those companies who flout it.

Please reconsider carrying this product, or at the very least, give equal shelf and advertising space to any of the many breastfeeding advocacy lines of clothing out there. To do otherwise does your customers an extreme disservice.

Thank you.
Sarah H.

I find your formula 4 success shirt to be in bad taste. This shirt is also in violation of the WHO code for marketing breastmilk substitutes. To meet the tastes of your diversified marketing group, it would be well advised to sell a pro-breastfeeding baby outfit beside the formula one. I for one would purchase it. Thanks

I sent this.

we are talking about staging a nurse in locally. Would anyone want to talk about picking a mutual date and nurse in nationwide? It would need to be a couple of weeks out so that we can organzie adequately.
