We hung out with a newborn yesterday...

Sami is the youngest baby in my playgroup, so it's rare that I encounter a littler baby....

But yesterday I hung out with a mama friend whose baby was 3.5 wo. Sami looked absolutely gargantuan next to this babe. I kind of forgot how very tiny he once was. It seems like so long ago that our babes were newborns, doesn't it?

It's crazy huh?! My friend has a 1 m/o and he seems soooooo tiny to me! Time sure flies!

Yup, I saw one at the studio this morning when I was getting Will's 4 mo pix done, and was thinking the same thing. Sooo teeny!

When Wesley was 10 weeks old I went to a baby shower for a mom whose baby was a newborn (4 weeks). I didn't even ask to hold her baby because I felt like it would be disloyal to my baby...

hey good question - when do they stop being newborns and begin their infant careers LOL? I guess 4 months is still pretty darn new

i tend to be in denial with my babies in that way

they are newborn till about 6 months, babies till they are about 2 and toddlers till they are out of nappies, my 3 yo has only just stopped being a toddler to me!

OK, I'm sooooo weird, but this is my worldview...

There are two exclusive "clubs" out there:

When you're expecting, you're part of this special "pregnancy club" of women who are also pg--- you're strangers, but when you're out and about and bump into each other, you give each other that knowing club smile

When you're baby is brand new, then you're part of the "moms with tiny new babies club." Instead of the knowing club smile, the "club handshake" is to share happy details of your labor and/or baby's personality

But once your baby gets bigger, the members of those two clubs no longer recognize you; you're in essence excommunicated; and you're now part of the huge generic sea of "moms with kids."

LOL, that must sound so weird, but I feel like I've just been excommunicated from the two exclusive clubs...

Oh, and not that I don't think being a mom of kids is a glorious thing, it truly is glorious!, it's just that no strangers make a big deal out of it at the grocery store, shopping mall, etc...

I think I read somewhere that they're officially "newborns" until 6 weeks.

Can I add to the "club" theory? This being my first child, being part of the "vast sea of moms with kids" is a new thing for me. So instead of being a member of the "young marrieds with no kids" I'm now initiated into the club of "parents with young children."

Same here. Isn't it weird and cool? It's like there's an instant bond with other members of the club. I now have conversations with total stranger mommies every time I go to Whole Foods LOL. I never used to talk to people in the grocery store before I had this little guy.
