Covered w/o permission at Salvation Army

I was recently in a Salvation Army, doing some shopping, my 10m. old was cranky and hungry, so I sat down on a bench to feed him. A female employee came over to me, with a large t-shirt and said "I dont mind but..." and proceeded to cover DS and I up! I was SO SHOCKED I couldnt even speak. I promptly removed the t-shirt and have written that store, the national headquarters, and the local newspaper editor, about my experience.

That's amazing! I wonder what the uproar would be if one of us lactivists walked up to a FF by choice & threw a large tee shirt over them?

Less step out of reality for the moment and pretend that

a) you didn't live in one of the many states where it is illegal for anyone to even ASK you to cover up in a place where both moms and babies are allowed.

b) you were completely nude from the waiste up.

c) You knew where that large t shirt came from, and knew that it was not dirty or nasty, or you know who has worn it last, and that it was clean.

d) You didn't probably already have your own blanket or something with you that she could have asked you to use.

e) You knew this woman,
and
f) It really mattered to you whether she "minded" or not.


THE VERY LEAST SHE COULD HAVE DONE WAS TO ASK YOUR PERMISSION TO COVER YOU UP!

I am appauled! I don't even know what to seay since most of the words that I want to say are profanities.

I feel blessed that the only comment I have ever received about NIP was someone telling me not to cover the baby up when it's so hot out. My heart goes out to all you Mamas who have been made to feel uncomfortable or discriminated against.

Oh wow..I'm so sorry this happened to you. I only wish someone would do something like this to me because I'm so ready to just go off on some poor ignorant person!!! I'd gather up all my friends that bf and go back to that store and all together nurse our babes. Maybe you'd like to do this?

i've come to realize, especially now being a mother, that women's and children's rights are constantly being violated here in the good old U-S of A.

we have the right to bear arms but we are made to feel like criminals for nourishing and nurturing our babies. makes me sick.

lactivists, unite! we are all revolutionaries every time we nurse our dear children outside of our homes. i wish it wasn't so, but this is the state of affairs, and i'm going to do my part to break down these sexist, discriminatory beliefs.

OMG. I am speechless...almost. I may have considered screaming as if I were being assaulted...not a far cry...what makes anyone thing they can put anything over anyones baby's face...I'd of let the whole store know I was pissed. What a *#@%^!!!!!

So this was a Salvation Army thrift store?

They also have churches and I'd be REALLY surprised if this happened at the church...but anything is possible. They are a very good organization that feed a lot of hungry people, etc. They helped me so much when I was a child. I went to their church as a kid and I saw how they were very supportive of mother's in particular. I think the leaders of the organization would be very interested to know this happened to you and would take action. They hire people from the community to work the thrift stores...so who knows what any given person feels about children, families, etc. I'm so sorry you had this negative experience. You were totally fine to nurse your child without covering up!! The individual who covered you was unenlightened to say the least.

All I gotta say (don't flame me anyone!) is sometimes people who work in those places are a little weird! I was at the Goodwill Super Store about a month ago with DD sitting facing forward in a New Native Pouch. She was all bundled in like a little kangaroo and some lady who worked there came up and started talking at her, and then without a word to me actually reached INTO the pouch without permission and started grabbing DD and taking her out!!! I kinda stepped back and turned away so she couldn't get her out, and THEN she asked if she could hold her! I was taken aback that someone would just do something like that.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread, just wanted to say I can totally imagine weird things happenning at the thrift store! I'm glad you're writing and taking it higher up.

Something similar happened to me at WALMART (blah, lol) when DD was about a week old. I was at the customer service desk getting a money order and the lady actually reached over the counter & tried to take DD away from me!! I was SO angry!!

My letters will be going out today. This happened in Grand Junction, Colorado, which is a back-asswards hick town (IMO). I used to live there (not by choice!), and thankfully we were able to move last fall. DH still has to work there a couple of days each week, and I go with him sometimes.

Even if there are not laws clarifying the basic right to feed your baby wherever you have a legal right to be, I think that what that lady did could amount to a form of assault. She touched you and your baby without permission. Unwelcome touch is unwelcome touch.
