I love my cloth diapers, and want to start making some for my dd. She is a tall, lean baby. Right now I use nb Kissaluvs, but think I should move on to a pocket style diaper for the next size. Does this sound like a good idea, or is there something else? I can make diapers that use a cover or not. I have a sewing machine as well as a serger. Can anyone give me suggestions on a pattern to start with? I am not new to sewing, but new to sewing diapers. TIA!!

the darling diaper pocket fitted pattern is a great one to start with. You can use PUL on the outside instead of an absorbent material.

Gosh, there are some great patterns out there!!
Like was already mentioned, the Darling Diapers patterns are pretty darn popular (I do have the pocket fitted and the AIO but haven't made them yet!), plus one bonus is that they are e-mailed to you in PDF format, so you get pretty darn close to instant gratification (the wait is usually 24 hrs or less!) and you can print off as many pieces as you'd like or need.
Another quite popular purchased pattern is the Very Baby AIO pattern. It's easy to convert the pattern into a pocket and I"ve done so quite a bit! I think it's a quite straight-forward pattern and I know I've totally gotten my money's worth and then some from it. It can be found at http://www.diapershop.com
There are also some great free patterns out there! There is a sticky at the top of the forum with lists of places to get patterns... I can't remember all of them. The only one I've tried is the Wee Weka side-snapping pocket pattern (it can be side-aplix as well) and I really think it's a great pattern and I plan on making quite a few in this style! The pattern is on the Nappy Network site (can't remember the exact URL though right now!)!
This should give you at least a pretty darn good start!

Thanks ladies~I had my eye on the Very Baby, and I'll check out the others. If I use an AIO for an older baby, when do I need to start using soakers?

I prefer the fit of the darling diapers AIO on my tall lean baby.
I like the instructions on the VB AIO though and am glad I have both patterns.

I really prefer a side-snapping or side-aplix diaper on my tall/lean toddler. With a front aplix or front snapping diaper, you don't have as much leeway in customizing the tightness of the waist as compared to the tightness of the thighs. I can't get a good fit on DD in a VB AIO (boughten from a WAHM or sewn by me)... to get the legs tight enough, the waist is too tight. A medium-long works the best if I have to do a VB AIO, but still not adjustable enough for my tastes.
I have both the VB AIO and the DD AIO. I much prefer the DD AIO because it includes separate pattern pieces for the side-closure as compared to the front-closure. No guesswork. The VB AIO can be converted into a side-closure, but you have to do the work to convert it (I don't have the confidence to do that).

Oh i love love my DD aio! It was emailed in like two hours, so I got started the same day, plus if i need another copy it's already on my computer. And I like that you can make fitteds and covers out of it too, without any trouble at all! I could make a pocket super easy as well. And it's one of the cheaper ones out there. I also found the sizing to be more similar to your run-of-the-mill popular dipes.

Another one you might look at (I just ordered from a co-op) is Chloe Toes, it looks really nice and simple and I'm eager to try it. http://www.chloetoesboutique.com/store/Default.asp

Chloe Toes coop?
Hi there. New here and mostly a lurker but I saw your post and have to ask... Did you say you bought the Chloe Toes pattern from a coop? Could you tell me which coop? And how much? Is the order closed or can I still get them? I love the look of these but would like to get a coop price. And did they offer the shoes pattern too?
