Building fences

DH and I have decided to put up a wire and post fence until we can afford the 6 foot wooden privacy fence we want in our back yard, which will probably be next spring or summer. Our goal is to provide a safe place for dd and the dog to play (right now I'm constantly on guard if either is out of sight for 3 seconds: are they headed for the front yard, or the ROAD?!, are they chasing the neighbor's cat? ) and to keep people out of our space.

We've pretty much decided on the 4' vinyl covered wire with the 4' metal posts but we're stumped on gates. Granted we *could* just not have gates but our driveway is in the backyard and that could be a real PITA without a gate. Is it possible to have a gate without pouring cemement and putting in wooden posts? What is the best method?

Why not buy a wire gate that hangs on metal posts? Or do they not make those anymore? Could possibly find one at salvage with pretty scrollwork even. Also, if watching my dad do it counts, pouring concrete for sinking posts isn't a highly skilled task. I assume you'll have a post-hole digger on hand...

Dig a post hole.
Mix concrete powder and water in a big bucket you do not love.
Pour into hole.
Push in post.
Let dry before hanging the gate.

This may be a good question for the country living/off the grid mamas, too. They'll know lots about fences over there.

I meant the post-hole digger tool, but in a way, yes.

If you are a post-hole diggin' virgin, see here. They have these at hardware stores.
