Who drives an old car?

We do! Mine's a 1995 Mercury Villager with 187,000 miles. We replaced the engine a couple of years ago so the engine probably has 87,000 (it had 60,000 when it went it).

It gets around 20 mpgs which seems consistent with newer minivans.

I love it like a well worn shoe.

We have never had a new vehicle...if we can't pay cash for a car, we don't need it... I have a 94 ford aerostar minivan (which is a "must have" with 6 people, and 1 on the way, one of them disabled and needing a wheelchair hauled around, plus the stroller and all the other stuff we seem to have to carry around) it's a gas guzzler, probably 15 MPG...DH drives a 91 (I think) toyota pick up, same gas milage as a small car, but with the hauling ability he needs. Also have a 89 ford f150 that we're trying to sell (gas guzzler).

I will be upgrading, hopefully next year, to a new(er) minivan that has dual sliding doors....so handy with 2 car seats!!

We have a 91 Subaru Legacy (wagon). 240K miles on it and going strong. We get it checked every 3-6 months. It cost $3200 5 years ago. It runs great, we off-road it in the desert and can car camp in it. Good gas mileage, too. 28 city/32 highway (used to be better though). Annually, so far the car has cost us $1750 average per year to own, repair, and insure. Much better than car payments!

We also like Toyota although I'm used to a heavier car like a Subaru. We got ds a 94 Toyota Tercel. I'm sure it had lots of miles on it, though I can't remember. Looking for an old Toyota for dd now.

I drive a 91 Lumina and the family veichle is a 95 Pontiac Transport van. I was very blessed to have both of these veichles gifted to us by my dad. When one of them finally goes, dh really wants a VW van or bus...

We drive a '94 Volvo wagon that we bought 4 years ago with 120,000 miles on it. It now has about 145k miles. Got 20 mi/gallon when we bought it, but after having some maintenance, it gets more like 25. Go figure. I think we spend about $2,000 a year on it (insurance, maintenance, city stickers, etc.) I love, love, love this car and hope it lasts many more years.

klondikesky - that's so wonderful that your mileage got better with some extra TLC on the car. fantastic! what a bonus.

That's great that you can drive an old car. I got a free car from my grandparents, a 1982 Crown Victoria station wagon. I really liked it but it had a lot of problems and ended up costing us a lot of $$ in towing and repairs. Our next car was a 1998 Nissan Sentra, no frills at all. Not even automatic windows or anything. We still have that car. We bought a used CRV when I was pg with Nitara because the Nissan's clutch hurts my knee. I needed an automatic. We plan to keep both cars until they get too expensive to maintain. The Nissan was paid off a couple of years ago!

I enjoy a spiritual connection with my 1990 Dodge Dakota. I am the only mama in my little town that drives a truck that most teenage boys would love to have- complete with my Nirvana cd blasting out of the windows!

I am jealous of those that have good running PAID FOR vehicles! Iused to have a 91 Lumina, but my stepdad wrecked it (I miss that car!). We then bought a 97 Blazer...we got rid of that last Friday. What a piece of crap! So now, I have a newer car and payments again. for reliable transportation on the payments!

We drive (as a 1 car family) a 1994 Jeep Cherokee.....it has 168,000 miles but its paid for. We have to get another car because I am due with our third child on May 8th and dh has a son that comes every other weekend. SO three row seating it is! Hopefully I can get my father or grandfather to help us out because we CAN NOT afford a car payment.Kinda makes me nervous....I can imagine driving a brand new vehicle.I would love to have a really nice van though.....dh wont drive a wagon.

Until November, we were driving a 1995 Escort. In Nov, though, the transmission went out, which was just one of many in a long line of expenses that the car has had recently. Between towing bills and repairs, we were putting so much money into the car. We haven't fixed it yet, and we got a "new to us" 2001 Neon in November. So now we do have payments, but we also have a car with pretty low mileage and I don't have to worry about breaking down in the middle of a busy street with a baby again!

We plan to keep this car until its on its last legs too, and we have actually decided to remain a one-car family (going to either fix and sell, or sell as scrap, the old car) since we're moving 1.5 miles from DH's work. So we're still going to be saving a lot of money.

My husband is a mechainic, so our cars last until we're done with them. But currently I'm driving a 1986 Nissan pick up truck. It has over 300,000 miles on it, and it's still on it's first engine. It will probably go anothr 200,000 before we have to change the engine.

I have a 94 plymouth grand voyager with 204,000 mi. I am the 3rd owner. We did a work trade for it which would have been 3,000.00 and we've put about 300.00 into it aside from oil changes and gas.

We're looking into a biodiesel once we sell our house. used of course.

I drive a 98 Chevy Prism, which was bought from a car rental company. We also have a 77 Ford truck for short trips around town.

I drive a 96 Suburu. Sub's rock! I don't believe in new cars, so to speak. There are already plenty to go around to buy used, plus we ride bikes and walk, too. This makes sense to us as long as our car is tuned up and not spewing crap all over the place.

We do! I drive a 1986 Volvo Wagon "Velvet Elvis", with 300+k (odometer went out) purchased for $100 because the dealer couldn't get it started, dh inserted a fuse into the empty fuse slot in the electric panel and started him right up (and boy was the dealer : ) I think I get about 20mpg, we also have a 1984 Suburban we got for $800 because the dealer didn't have room for it on his lot (we saw it right as it was being brought in - the car gods look out for us in their supreme wisdom ) and dh is in the process of converting it to veggie diesel (we live blocks from a potato chip factory - hooray for oil!) Good cheap cars are out there if you know where to look. They're not all broken down clunkers. Many have one cheaply repaired problem that someone else doesn't want to deal with.

We have a 94 Volvo Wagon that I *love* despite the problems we've had with it in the last year or so (approx. $3k in repairs!). It was a college graduation gift from my parents a couple years ago, so we've never had any car payments. It has 127k miles on it.

Dh drives an 88 Chevy Corsica that he bought for $100 from a friend while in college. It has more than 150k miles on it. That car has always been great for us. It looks awful, though! The original paint has come off and it has been spray painted the same color as the original a couple times. Dh calls it "The Wild Orchid" . This car was actually our only car while I was in college - we drove it from KY to OH a bunch of times and to MD and MI. It never let us down once!
