yep! i was upstairs and my daughter ran up to tell me that my husband said i had to come see the news (i had told him about what happened to you). so i ran down and saw it come on after the commercial break.

they showed you speaking and nursing your gorgeous baby. they also interviewed some jerk who said we should go in a hall or bathroom. and they talked to the fred meyer rep who said it shouldn't happen again and that fred meyer was wrong.

you were great, and i agree, the community should be supportive of breastfeeding!

I just saw it on the news too! You did good, momma!

I just saw the news... your story was the first thing they aired.. all I can say is YOU ROCK..

I love how they said coperate said the "manager acted in accordance" but when the news interviewed someoen from the store after 70-something emails they changed their story and made sure to say you were welcome in their store to nurse as you wish.. ASSHATS!

Good for you mama.

PS: I am just visiting Oregon for a few more days.. glad I actually got to see the story myself.

Nadine--heard of Dori Monson of KIRO radio?

Nadine...Dori Monson, of KIRO radio in Seattle has tried to contact me, presumably for an interview. I'm not familiar with him, are you? Do you know what sort of POV he would take on NIP? His bio on the radio web site says he doesn't adhere to a particular political stance, but "considers himself a government watchdog, geared toward keeping government's role in our lives to reasonable limit." Sounds too much like "fair and balanced" a la Fox News. Last thing I want right now is to talk with a Bill O'Reilly wanna-be.

I went to the Hollywood FM today with my babe. She is currently on nursing strike #3 and will only nurse before bed and in the morning . But, I decided to "pretend nurse" her today in the shoe dept indiscretely. She actually latched on for 5 minutes! I got some stares from the staff probably due to the recent publicity, but nobody said a word. I think we should all be nursing whenever possible to reinforce and test out their "new" policy and employee education program concerning bf.

i don't know him, i've heard of him though. my husband said he's never heard him be rude to people he's interviewed and that he's definitely not like bill o'reilly. and that he's conservative on some things and liberal on others. my husband has no idea on what he thinks his views of nip would be. he thinks that even if he's against it that he probably wouldn't be rude he would just ask you serious questions.

hopefully someone else here knows more about him. if you do agree to it let us know. i'll listen and give yousome support.

Descrimination in WA?

Hi Mama's,

My name is Kim Rechner I am a Registered Nurse in a Tacoma Hospital. When I returned to work after having each of my children I found a large lack of support from my employeer to continue breastfeeding/pumping. To make a long story short, my husband and I have been working for the last 2 years (with a local Senator) to change WA State Law in regards to supporting working/breastfeeding mothers. (I can link you to that information if you would like)

In the interim, I am trying to collect stories regarding any kind of descrimination you may have faced either while breastfeeding your child or after you returned to work and wanted to continue bf by pumping. Did the lack of support at work cause you to quit breastfeeding your baby? Or have you faced other descrimination in the State of WA? Your answers can be confidential. I just appreciate anything you can give me.

Kim, Logan 26 months and still bf, Lance 4!

 You've found a cure for nursing strikes ! I'll have to try that one... "pretend" NIP.

It probably works because she thought it was what you DIDN'T want...

Nurse In?

Well, I didn't think the Fred Meyer situation really called for a nurse-in and I'm pleased that the company has publicly expressed that mothers are welcome to breastfeed in its stores, "discreetly" or not. Unfortunately, all the backlash (see my blog) has persuaded me that indeed more awareness needs to be raised regarding the basic human rights of babies, who do not deserve to be covered while eating or wait 'til their mamas can scurry off to whatever nursing mothers ghetto stores some people would prefer babies to eat. I would like to do something creative, maybe in multiple locations and cities. I know there is TONS of support for this, but I don't know exactly where to start. If anyone here's done some organizing and could help me get the ball rolling, please PM me.

ProMom has an activity called a "Nurse Out" to coincide with International Breastfeeding Week. Maybe you could organize something in your local area?

What's the difference?

As you can see, the basic difference between a Nurse OUT and a nurse-IN relates to the purpose for the event. The former tries to increase the visibility of nursing in the public eye, while the latter aims to protest or change policy.

Nurse Out organizers should be careful to plan their local Nurse Out in such away as to ensure that it will not be confused with a nurse-in.

Here are some tips:

* Choose a wide area to blanket with nursing mothers, rather than a specific spot to meet and nurse together. Perfect examples are throughout the park, throughout the mall, and from "50th to 74th Street". Imagine seeing a mother on every bench!
* Choose a relatively wide timeframe, so that working mothers and mothers with prior engagements can make it ? or choose an entire day to target the area!
* After the appointed timeframe, suggest a spot ? a picnic area, ice cream parlor, playground ? where mothers can meet and socialize if they want.
* In your flyers and press releases, be sure to encourage mothers to get out and nurse throughout the week of August 1-8, even if they can't make it to the planned Nurse Out.

Nurse Out, then!

Yes, this is more along the lines of what I have been thinking about and discussing with friends.
