where to get moving boxes?

I should make that "where to get FREE moving boxes" (thus the frugal part)

I've tried freecycle, but didn't realize there were lots of other people already scouring our list and jumping on any opportunity there might have been.. and I stopped at BJ's wholesale store, but those are more like cartons (no tops) and I need something that can close and be taped up.

hmmm.. it can't be this difficult to get a free piece of cardboard

liquor stores. - they have the best boxes because they aren't too big and thus don't end up too heavy. Plus they are thick for things like dishes. You can take out the bottle inserts in them and use them for extra padding. Call a store and they will tell you when they unload and you can get *tons* of them.

Good luck with your move!

We got most of our moving boxes from the local liquor store, and they worked great -- very sturdy, not too big, not too small. Some of the best boxes-with-lids we got from my mother, who works in an office -- the boxes their reams of paper come in were fabulous. A little bigger than the liquor store boxes, VERY sturdy, with separate lids and handholds on the sides.

Try Craig's List. We recently moved and paid for less than 10 boxes all of the otehrs we got from Freecycle or Craig's List.

I know someone else who went to the local vitamin and health food stores asking about boxes - not major chains but the smaller stores and got all of her boxes for moving that way.

It can be done

Banana boxes! They are awesome, sturdy, and because the lid fits over the bottom, they stack very well. We've used them many times for long distance moves. We've stacked them nearly all the way up to the roof of the moving van. No crushing or anything. They are difficult to break down, so grocery stores' employees love to let you take them. We always got plenty from Walmart.

ETA: Dh would go to Walmart about 10-11 pm when they were restocking and had boxes galore.

Wow! Fast responses.. Thanks, ladies!!

AM- I will pack the kids up and hit some of the liquor stores (that just sounds wrong.. ) and hopefully I will be able to score a few to get started. There are a few pretty close by and it will be an excuse to get out of the house

Sarah- I know just the boxes you're talking about- those are awesome! My mom is a teacher, so maybe I will ask her to check their office to see if she can fid one or two that would have been tossed anyway.

JM- I'm not too familiar yet with Craig's List, but I will give it a shot. It would be nice to only have to pay for the packing tape!

thanks all for the help

Tanya.. that's a good idea. DH sometimes gets out of work around that time, anyway, so I'll ask him to stop in and check. Thanks

I might have to resort to doing that, depending on how I make out with these other options..v

I got some great boxes from Petsmart.

If you call and ask the stores, they will sometimes save boxes for you to pick up. Both Petsmart and Stein Mart did that for me.

We just moved and I got all our moving boxes from craigslist. Well, 90 percent. The other ones I got from posting on our local Mother's Club yahoo group that I needed moving boxes. I paid for none of them and turned around and craigslisted the boxes back. Some people had packing material too, which was great...

I've called grocery stores and they've saved them back for me.

If you can find someone who sells Avon, those boxes are great -- very sturdy, they have lids, and they are a good size. We used them when we moved since I was selling it at the time and had an abundance.

where to get moving boxes?

banana boxes from the grocery store work great! They have lids and handles. You can ask in the produce department, usually they are put out in the morning. When using the boxes for moving, I would put cloth items in plastic bags, then into the boxes. I wrapped dishes in paper and put directly into boxes. The great thing about these boxes is that they are a very managable size to carry and stack. Good Kuck!

I know you have great responses already, but I wanted to add that Quizno's has these boxes that they get their bread shipped in that are a very good moving size and there is a middle insert that they use to separate the bread that you can put on the bottom of the box for extra support. I swear by them and since they are all the same size it makes for very easy stacking and organizing. Every Quizno's uses between 3-6 a day...

We moved right after Harry Potter 6 came out and got over 100 Harry Potter boxes from Barnes and Noble...they were PERFECT for books, nicknacks, dishes, junk drawers, etc. We do the liquor store and toilet paper and banana boxes too.

I second the book boxes! Ask your library, bookstore, university bookstore.
They are perfect and heavy duty!

Hi! Check the Tim Hortons I used to work at. Every Wed, and Fri I think they get a shipment and break the boxes down and put them in the cardboard bin out back. Its in a corral but not locked and they don't care if you take them! Good Luck!
