how many?

I know this has been asked before, but I couldn't find the thread. I have been making fitted diapers and wool covers for our yet unconcieved baby, and I need someone to tell me when to stop Right now I have.

* newborn: 4 fitted, some prefolds, 1 knitted wool soaker, 2 recycled wool wraps, 1 pair recycled wool longies( I haven't made a lot of newborn because they only go to 10 lbs and my hubby and I were both close to that when we were born so I'm not expecting a "newborn size baby"
* medium(10-20lbs): 12 fitted, 3 knitted wool soakers, 1 knitted wool longies, 2 recycled wool wraps, 1 pair recycled wool longies
* then I have a knitted wool soaker size large and one size extra large

I know I still need to make more and I love making them, it's kind of an obsession. Any suggestions on what I should concentrate on? I'm planning on getting a bunch of prefolds in all sizes too. I'm planning on using the fitteds with the knitted covers and the prefolds with the recycled wraps. Thanks for any advice!

First off, I'd make more newborn dipes. My dh and I were both over 8 lbs each so I was expecting around that size of a baby. Both my kids were 6 lbs and some oz. When I have another baby, I'm going to make some in preemie too for that very reason. I wasn't using cloth at the time so it wasn't a big deal then but I would've been SOL if I'd only made bigger dipes.

So, if I were in your position, I'd figure that the baby probably wouldn't be under 8 lbs or maybe 7 and some change. But, I'd make at least enough newborn diapers to last a day (12 or so). Covers, I'd just make 3 or 4.

Medium sized dipes, I'd make at least enough for 2 days and b/c I am overly cautious, that would be 24. Especially if you have a bigger baby, your dc could very well be in the medium-sized diapers and still going to the bathroom like a newborn does and you will not want to be unprepared for that.

By the time you get to large, you'll probably have some more time on your hands. But b/c babies seem to grow literally overnight I'd make a few more of those also. In my case (b/c of my small babies) I'd make a day's worth (around 10).

Now all that said, when I have my next baby this is the stash I'm planning:

What I have now plus:
3 days of preemie diapers
2 days of newborn diapers
2 days of medium-sized diapers
1 day of large diapers
Enough covers for two changes a day *just in case* and one for night for each size

And that is only because we don't find out the sex beforehand! Although we're saving money compared to the disposables we used, it isn't much when I'm through I just don't like HAVING to do laundry and I like it even less when I'm dead on my feet tired b/c of a newborn baby!

Congrats on your baby!

Oh, and I don't do wool so I'm not sure about that but I've heard that the covers can last for awhile, you don't have to change them every day so you'd be able to make less.

I wouldn't make any more bigger ones until the baby arrives, lots of people have posted on how the ones they have spent time, money and energy making were not in an ideal world the best combos of fabrics or patterns!
I have just made small size, not newborn,my last three have been big, and I do have lots of terry squares if the smalls are way too big,I have added extra snaps to make them not far off a newborn!
I have made 30 first size as I have only the blue sky and sunshine to dry them,i.e no tumble dryer!

I have made a huge range of different style fitteds and will see what works best for this one in a couple of weeks and base my mediums round that!

This is good advice.

My babies have ranged from 8lbs 3oz to 9lbs 9oz, and even though they're on the bigger side of newborns, I'm glad I made the newborn size. Although they're only in them for a few weeks, it's nice to have something that fits right during those first few days when you don't have the energy to deal with the leaks that will inevitably occur from wearing a too-big diaper.

I sewed up about 3 dozen each NBs and SMs before baby was born, in a variety of organic fitteds, AIOs, and prefolds. If I had it to do all over again, the only thing I'd do differently is no AIOs. I only made a few AIOs for times when we'd be going out, but I found I preferred fitteds and wool, even for the diaper bag. There's just something icky to me about putting PUL on a baby.

Now that baby is almost 5 mos old, he's just about ready for mediums, and I'm excited to be sewing diapers again. I'm experimenting with pocket diapers, using organic cotton and (hopefully soon) bamboo. I'm adjusting the pattern ever-so-slightly to account for his being long and skinny. I wouldn't have known to do this if I had sewn them before he was born.
