Sam is in the satellite nursery! They moved her Friday, and said that she had the fastest upgrade of any 30 week baby. She was only in the "critical" NICU for 8 days, and is now in the "feed 'em and grow 'em" satellite nursery. I am so proud of our little girl!
We tried breastfeeding on Friday, and she latched once or twice for 10 seconds or so before she got tired. Yesterday she latched and sucked long enough for my milk to let down, and then pulled away, so we both got pretty soaked. Just an excuse for mama to change her clothes!
Her temperature probe was removed yesterday, and she's wearing clothes and maintaining her body heat for the most part. She was out of the isolette for about 5 hours total yesterday, and only dropped her body temp one degree. Not bad for someone with no fat on her little body!
As of yesterday, she is receiving 27ml of milk, and her IV is gone. She's just on milk now! Today they'll increase her to 30ml (they're also adding calories to my milk to fatten her up more quickly), then 32ml tomorrow and 35ml on Wednesday. She is still digesting all of her feeds. We're going to keep putting her to breast every day in the hopes that she'll catch on soon. We're doing it around meal time (every 3 hours) so that hopefully she gets the idea that if she sucks on this thing in her face, she ends up with a full belly.
We are much more independent in her care now. Since she's off the bilirubin lights for good, we can pretty much hold her indefinitely, and are able to change her diapers, dress her, bathe her...pretty much do everything we would normally do at home, we just have the back-up of the nurses if need be.
She's amazing, and impresses us everyday. She'll be 32 weeks gestation tomorrow. As of yesterday she weighs 3lb, 2.8 oz. She needs to gain about 300 grams, or 13 ounces before she's the accepted weight to come home (1800 grams). They MAY allow her to go a little tiny bit early if she's been reliably gaining weight. We'd love to get her home for Mother's Day. That would be the best gift in the world!!
I'll add more pictures to the website on Wednesday when I go home.
Way to go, Baby Sam!
