welcome Samantha - our newest June due date baby! - Page 3

Sam's up to 12ml of milk every 3 hours, via feeding tube, and is still tolerating her feeds well. She's digesting all of the milk she's being given, and has gained another ounce, so now we're around 3/3. Slow and steady!

She came off the bili lights today, which was another minor hurdle to jump.

Heading over for kangaroo care. We'll get more pictures this weekend.

She's 31 weeks today! In two more weeks they'll start trying to feed her with a bottle to get her sucking reflex down. Hopefully she'll be a fast learner!

3-3 is right about what Maggie was at 31 weeks.

Welcome sweet baby Samantha!! She is absolutely gorgeous and so much hair! She looked like a baby born at term until I saw her holding Daddy's wedding band.

Congrats Momma! You have a trooper on your hands!

I can't believe how mature she looks for 10 weeks early!!! What a beauty.

Good work, Mama. Keep that milk coming!

Sam is in the satellite nursery! They moved her Friday, and said that she had the fastest upgrade of any 30 week baby. She was only in the "critical" NICU for 8 days, and is now in the "feed 'em and grow 'em" satellite nursery. I am so proud of our little girl!

We tried breastfeeding on Friday, and she latched once or twice for 10 seconds or so before she got tired. Yesterday she latched and sucked long enough for my milk to let down, and then pulled away, so we both got pretty soaked. Just an excuse for mama to change her clothes!

Her temperature probe was removed yesterday, and she's wearing clothes and maintaining her body heat for the most part. She was out of the isolette for about 5 hours total yesterday, and only dropped her body temp one degree. Not bad for someone with no fat on her little body!

As of yesterday, she is receiving 27ml of milk, and her IV is gone. She's just on milk now! Today they'll increase her to 30ml (they're also adding calories to my milk to fatten her up more quickly), then 32ml tomorrow and 35ml on Wednesday. She is still digesting all of her feeds. We're going to keep putting her to breast every day in the hopes that she'll catch on soon. We're doing it around meal time (every 3 hours) so that hopefully she gets the idea that if she sucks on this thing in her face, she ends up with a full belly.

We are much more independent in her care now. Since she's off the bilirubin lights for good, we can pretty much hold her indefinitely, and are able to change her diapers, dress her, bathe her...pretty much do everything we would normally do at home, we just have the back-up of the nurses if need be.

She's amazing, and impresses us everyday. She'll be 32 weeks gestation tomorrow. As of yesterday she weighs 3lb, 2.8 oz. She needs to gain about 300 grams, or 13 ounces before she's the accepted weight to come home (1800 grams). They MAY allow her to go a little tiny bit early if she's been reliably gaining weight. We'd love to get her home for Mother's Day. That would be the best gift in the world!!

I'll add more pictures to the website on Wednesday when I go home.

Way to go, Baby Sam!

More pictures have been added at www.flickr.com/photos/samanthab.

She's up to 3lb, 7oz now, as of last night, and took almost half of her feeding from a bottle this morning. She's still working at the breast, and is getting stronger the more she drinks from a bottle, so that's a good thing. We just need to get her eating so that she can come home!

Sam took 25 of her 30ccs from her bottle today, and nuzzled mama at each feeding! She pulled her feeding tube out three times in the last 24 hours, so she seems to be just as anxious to get to eat when and how she wants as we are! We just need to get her mouth a little stronger, because she's exhausted at the end of a feeding.

She's 3 lb, 9.4 oz! She's 4.4 oz over her birth weight, and has put on almost 9 oz in less than a week! At this rate, she'll be home in no time flat! She only has to weight 1800 grams to come home, and is at 1627 now. She's only got about 6 oz to go! I am so deeply excited. We just have to get her eating. It's hard to imagine bringing a less than 4 pound baby home from the hospital, but she's only got to weigh 3 lb, 15 1/2 oz to be released. CRAZY!

Sorry I'm babbling, mamas. I'm just so excited.
