This book rocks! DS keeps asking to have it read again and again. It's a picture book that tells the story of Alia Muhammad Baker (chief librarian of the central library in Basra, Iraq) and her mission to save as much of the library's collection as possible before war takes the library.
It does depict soldiers with guns and buildings being burned and bombs dropping but a book about the war wouldn't make sense without those and for us it's OK cause it uses an age appropriate and hope filled way to discuss the war in/on Iraq that DS hears us talking about with family and friends anyway. It ends with Alia waiting for the war to end so a new library can be built but until then the books are safe with her.
