nonvaxing, docs and a move.

I am sorry to post this in a new thread, but I am new here and have some concerns. I have been kicked out by my children's ped and cannot get another ped to take my children. I have found a family doc to take the kids, but I am afraid they will kick us out as soon as they find out we don't vax.
most docs in our area are holding our health care hostage to get us to vax.

I am made to feel like a teriible parent when I state we don't vax by clinic staff ( when my son broke his arm). I am afraid someone will call cps for us not having a doctor. I feel like the only parent who doesn't vax.

we are also moving, and I am terrified. What if they refuse care as well?

how do you get your child medical care, while not vaxing? Even my closest friend lectures us about vaxing.

allison mom to 4 and one due in sept.

It seems to depend on your location. Around here a lot of drs will give you a hard time, but since it's a big city you can easily find a dr. who will keep you. That said, we don't do well visits. DD hasn't (knock wood) needed an MD yet.

I hate to say this, but it's helpful advice I learned from my SIL. She is BTW as mainstream as they come. But she says to dress nice when you go to the doc's office - she wears a skirt always and heels, blouse. I at least wear nice pants and a blouse. Because docs are used to being wealthy, it lessens the perceived gap between you and them, they feel on common ground with you. They will treat you with much more respect. I know it shouldn't be this way, but it generally is and so I figure if it helps my DD get better care, who am I to argue.

I have had no problem finding non-vax docs in 2 states. Ask around and act classy when you go to the docs office. Not the time to dress my DD in her tye dye or organically grown onsie. I put her in a cute dress.

Not saying this is why you have had bad luck. I'm sure some areas are easier than others to find a doc in. Just thought that tidbit of info might be helpful. Good luck

I don't think it would matter. We are on the state medical card. That says poor all over it. ( even though you can make a decent living and still get one, at least with four children) My Dh says that we need it right now and will get better ins once he is able to get a better job. One with ins. All we have the state card for is the medical coverage. We live in Il.

Do you need a ped? personally we don't do well child check-ups and in the event of say a broken bone we'd go to the ER and when the triage nurse does your child's intake questions you can just answer "yes" to the "are his immunizations current?" question and move on to the next one. I've done it several times (for stitches) and not had any problems. It really is none of the ER's business whether or not you vaccinate your child. And honestly the last time I said we no longer vaccinate and she said okay and moved on, no cps or anything... I would however advise just saying yes though to avoid a possible confrontation.

Good luck

Sadly...it really does make a difference. Particularly when you have state insurance. We were on medicaid for a year and a half and the docs definately would treat me differently depending upon how I was dressed. If you take the time to look nice, they think you are just "temporarily in need" whereas if you go in your Birks and crinkly skirt sporting your nursing beads, they think you are "taking advantage of the system."

(((HUGS))) on your situation. Hope your DH finds a better job soon.

Have you tried going to a Family doc? I have had better luck finding an open-minded doc by using a Family doc rather than a pedi.

I also was wondering if at the ER, what do you say if you don't have a ped?

I mean most docs won't take you on as a patient if you don't see them first.

and that 1st visit is all I need to get kicked out

I have been reading archives, as well as posts to this thread. You all have good information.

I want to say thanks for listening to me worry, and letting me have somewhere to worry!

Do you have a whole foods co-op or health food store in your area? If so, I would call their customer service desk and ask if anyone there knows of a "natural healing friendly" doctor in your area. That's what I did, and I was able to find a doctor who is very supportive of delayed vax/not vaxing. I don't live in a big metro area, either, but a small city in Pennsylvania. If there is a doc in your area, I'd be willing to bet someone at a health food store would know about him/her.

Thanks! That is a great idea. I certainly will try.

Holistic moms and LLL groups are usually good places to get names.

Does Illinois have a philosophical exemption?

I just say we have personal religious exemptions when faced with Er drs or when I called around to get a new Dr .
I have copies in my car in case of ER visits.

We found a family Dr also -no problems.
