what the heck do these mean?(acronyms, definitions & resources)

IUI? Any others? I know IVF, but what the heck?
post #2 of 43
IUI = InterUnterine Insemination (washed sperm is placed in uterus - bypassing cervix at time of ovulation.)

IVF = In Vitro Fertilization

AI = Artificial Insemination (is used interchangeably - tho incorrectly with IUI) AI is just placing the sperm (not always washed) high in the vaginal canal near the cervix.

What else do you want to know?

ART? HSG? ICI? ICSI? ZIFT? GIFT? SA? There are a ton!

I know. I am just starting to read up on everything and it can be confusing. Kinda want to know everything before we go in and Dr. suggests options. But holy cows between this terminology and adoption terminology my head is spinning.

Umm, what does "washed" mean?
post #5 of 43
ART = assisted reproduction technology (includes IUI, IVF...pretty much all of it.)

HSG = hysterosalpinogram (possibly the least comfortable procedure ever)
http://www.advancedfertility.com/hsg.htm

ICI = Inter Cervical Insemination (sperm inserted into cervix instead of into uterus)

ICSI = intercytoplasmic sperm injection - possibly part of an IVF - one sperm is picked up and injected into the egg. Helps with sperm problems or eggs that have too hard a zona for the sperm to penetrate.

ZIFT= zygote intrafallopian transfer http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/pre...lems/4096.html (forgive the baby center link)

GIFT= gamete intrafallopian transfer http://www.advancedfertility.com/gift.htm

SA= sperm analysis

Washed means they get the sample of sperm, centrifuge it, separate it from the semen, get rid of dead sperm, make is okay to put into your uterus. Unwashed sperm cannot be put directly into your uterus - more here:

That site is great! Go to the table of contents and dig around.

http://www.ivf.com/
That one belongs to a clinic - but also has a great amount of information.

Any other questions?

I think I might sticky this thread....terms and definitions are good to have handy.

I keep seeing people post about AF...I can't figure out what that means. I know I'll feel dumb when someone tells me, but someone please do so.

Aunt Flo, otherwise known as your period.
post #10 of 43
Ahhhh, okay, thank you! I never would have come up with that. It seemed like menstruation fit the context of what was being said but I couldn't figure out how AF matched that.

Thanks!

What about BF... what is that
post #12 of 43
Breastfeeding. Or Best Friend, or BoyFriend. Depending on context.

They are chain PMs that are going around. After you get one you are supposed to forward it on to others and place the statement in your signature. Kind of silly, but folks are having fun with it.

Thanks for clearing that up for me!!

BTW, here's a website that I found that might be helpful for this sticky:
