since the other thread was closed by the time i read it and i had to put in my 2cents:

Puff the Magic Dragon

Quote:
Noble kings and princes would bow whene’er they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name. oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, jackie paper came no more
And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,
So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave.
gets tears just rivering down my face. i cry for a good five minutes. once i tried to kareoke it b/c i it but i couldn't make it thru.

I always cry when I hear Celine Dions "Miracle" It really reminds me of my boys and I cry EVERY time I hear it. I would love to sing this at karaoke but I would bawl!

Quote:
"Miracle"

You're my life's one Miracle,
Everything I've done that's good
And you break my heart with tenderness,
And I confess it's true
I never knew a love like this till you....

You're the reason I was born
Now I finally know for sure
And I'm overwhelmed with happiness
So blessed to hold you close
The one that I love most
With all the future has so much for you in store
Who could ever love you more?

The nearest thing to heaven,
You're my angel from above
Only God creates such perfect looooove

When you smile at me, I cry
And to save your life I'll die
With a romance that is pure heart,
You are my dearest part
Whatever it requires,
I live for your desires
Forget my own, needs will come before
Who could ever love you more?

Well there is nothing you could ever do,
To make me stop, loving you
And every breath I take,
Is always for your sake
You sleep inside my dreams and know for sure
Who could ever love you more?

These are sure-fire tear-jerkers... especially if I'm already in a mood.

Tori Amos - "Winter" and "Crucify"
Phish - "Lifebuoy"

"Father & Daughter" by Paul Simon
"Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac
"You Raise me up" By josh Groban

"fear" by Ian Brown

Not because of the song itself, but because I was listening to it nonstop the last time my dad was in the hosp. before he died.

i cant think of a song that makes me cry, but last night my dh was playing guitar after dd and i went to bed and he was playing leonard cohen's hallelujah. i thought it sounded really nice and got up to give him a hug and he was crying. he said he was trying to practice the song without crying so he could do a cover of it sometime. he's so sweet.

Trying to think of the name of it....Its a new song.. Fall on me...by?..Matchbox 20? Rob Thomas? or simialr band...

Fall on me
And I'll be there for you and you'll be there for me
Forever with you
Forever with me...

Just thinking about I get tears in my eyes. It reminds me SO much about when we visited Olivia in Guatemala and on the last day we had to hand her back over to the foster mom and knew we wouldn't see her for weeks possibly months. As soon as we walked into the elevator to go back to our room to leave I literally collapsed on the elevator floor and started bawling. And DH bent down and was crying too rubbing my back telling me it was going to be okay and I would hold her again soon and how she would remember us. Whenever I hear it on the radio I start crying...

I rememebred more words.

"We were young
we were free like soldiers
falling down under the pale moonlight
Just let me hold you while your falling apart..
Just let me hold you while your falling apart..

Fall on me
And I'll be ther for you and you'll be there for me
Forever with you
Forever with me
Ever the same

And When You Come Back Down by Nickel Creek. I worked a cancer benefit for a mom who used to describe her relationship with her son (the cancer patient). He didn't make it and it still makes me sad when I hear it!

That stupid "cat's in the cradle" song gets me every time.

Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" does it to me every time.

And I get choked up when singing Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome" --

I've seen love go by my door
It's never been this close before
It's never been so easy or so slow.
I've been shooting in the dark too long
When something's not right it's wrong
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Dragon clouds so high above
I have only known careless love,
It's always hit me from below.
This time around it's more correct
It's right on target, so direct,
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Purple clover, Queen Anne's lace,
Crimson hair across your face,
You can make me cry if you don't know.
I don't remember what I was thinking of
You might be spoiling me too much, love,
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Flowers on the hillside are blooming crazy,
Crickets talking back and forth in rhyme,
Blue river running slow and lazy,
I could stay with you forever
And never realize the time.

Situations have ended sad,
Relationships have all been bad.
Mine have been like Verlaine and Rimbaud.
But there's no way I can compare
All those scenes to this affair,
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go.

You're gonna make me wonder what I'm doing,
Staying far behind without you.
You're gonna make me wonder what I'm saying,
You're gonna make me give myself a good talking to.

I'll look for you in Honolulu,
San Francisco, Ashtabula,
You're gonna have to leave me now, I know.
But I'll see you in the skies above,
The tall grass, and the ones I love,
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Bird York's "In The Deep". It's played in the movie, Crash, just as a young character has made an unimaginably horrible mistake.

Also, Bruce Springsteen's, The River. Coming from a small town where I knew everyone, I saw it happen for real, over and over.

It doesn't make me cry, but for some reason I think the saddest song I know is "Top of the World" by the Dixie Chicks. There is something about that song and its lyrics that cut straight to the core, for me.

I have a few.

Painters - Jewel
Fear - Sarah McLachlan

But this one really gets me:

Apron Strings - Everything But The Girl

Apron strings
hanging empty
crazy things
my body tells me
i want someone to tie to my lonely
apron strings

apron strings
waiting for you
pretty things
that i could call you
i want someone to tie to my lonely
apron strings

he'd look just like me when I was young
and I wonder as the days unwind
will he have your eyes or mine
then i wake up to my
apron strings
cold and lonely
for time brings
thoughts that only
will be quiet when someone clings to my
apron strings

and i'll be perfect in my own way
when you cry i'll be there
i'll sing to you and comb your hair
all your troubles i will share

for apron strings
can be used for other things
than what they're meant for
and you'd be happy wrapped in my
apron strings

The River gets me every time. And Silver Palomino by him as well, which was written for his son's best friend who lost his mother a bit ago. Ghost of Tom Joad too. Lots of Springsteen stuff breaks my heart.

Mother by Pink Floyd, but didn't until I had my son...now it breaks my heart and horrifies me.

I'm listening to it right now: 100 years by Five For Fighting. Makes me realize how short life really is.

And one that likely not many know about: Where've you Been by Kathy Mattea

Claire had all but givin up when
when she and Edwin fell in love
she his touched his face and shook her head
in disbelieve and sighed and said
in many dreams i've held you near
now at last your really here

Where you've been i've looked for you forever and a day
Where you've been i'm just not myself when you're away

he asked her for her hand for life
and she became a salesmans wife
he was home each night by eight
but one stormy evening he was late
her frightened tears fell to the floor
until his key turned in the door

Where you've been i've looked for you forever and a day
Where you've been i'm just not myself when you're away

they never spend a night apart for sixty years she heard him snore
now they're in the hospital in seperate beds on different floors
claire soon lost her memory, forgot the names of family
she never spoke a word again, then one day they wheeled him in
he held her hand and stroked her hair, in a fragile voice she said

Where you've been i've looked for you forever and a day
Where you've been i'm just not my-self when you're away
no, i'm just not my-self when you're away

"now I act like I don't remember, Mary acts like she don't care...is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse"

OMG, just about every song on the "Ghost" album makes me sad...."Youngstown", "Across the Border", [sob].

Some of Patti Scialfa's songs choke me up too:

"I had a fascination for
little things that don't mean much--in my
now tomorrow comes abandoning
painted ponies and a little brass ring
well I got that ring I pulled it down
and my little girls world came
tumbling down"

I hope they're a little happier at home than when they are at work.

But I think maybe Billie Holliday can be the saddest of all.
