Time to choose a new bank

Well, we're officially totally done with our old bank. We did get the satisfaction today of the branch manager admitting to us that we had virtually no way of knowing that they'd changed our entire fee structure, incidentally costing us nearly $500 in bank fees in the past two weeks.

It was almost funny. He DL-d our statements for the past five months in an attempt to show us where the notice was. Guess what wasn't there? And then he told us all about how they called everyone from that branch whose account was changing. We weren't included because when I opened the account a decade ago, it was at branch I no longer ever to. They didn't bother to call.

So, yeah, he's allegedly asking his regional to give us our money back; we're officially shopping for a new bank.

I know it's a hard thing since banks are pretty regional, I guess I'll x-post with the local forum. So far, we really liked TCF--they just seemed to be more together with less doubletalk than most of the others. Flagstar, a litle local one was great--right up until they announced we had to have our credit approved to get a debit card. That just sounds off to me. 5/3 was pretty clueless about the things that are important to us.

The big barrier with TCF is that we use Apple, and we do most of banking online. They admitted that their page does not display correctly with Mac browsers. Better than 5/3 I guess; the older man we talked to there was very confused and kept insisting that if we had "the internet" we should be able to do internet banking. I don't think he knew what we meant by the words "Apple," "Mac," or "browser."

So, anyone have any ideas? We need a Mac compatible online interface, free bill-pay online, and as many other free things we can get without having to have a daily balance greater than $1500-$2500.

TIA

I would check into a credit union...

We have always been happier with a credit union vs a megabank or chain.

A second for the credit union

I switched to Bank of America last year, and have been extremely happy! Free checking, free on-line bill pay, works great with the Mac, they even have this cool "portfolio" feature that lets you monitor your other accounts and investments from within their online banking system (if you're willing to plug in your passwords for those other sites -- I decided I was).

In order to get the free banking with no minimum balance, you do have to have direct deposit of a paycheck into the account.

I considered smaller banks and the credit union I'm also a member of, but none met my needs the way Bank of America does.

I've been with TCF for 10 years, and I've always been happy with them. We use PCs, so I can't comment on the Mac issue.

I bank with a credit union. I was worried that I'd get flack for my credit.. And didn't. I love credit unions. They rule!
