DS scratched up computer monitor. Can I fix it??

(If this isn't the right forum, where else do I post?)

Please mamas, any ideas what to do?

I was clearning up the kitchen (thinking I was achieving a lot) but someone left a pen out on the computer desk, and when I came to it to download some pics of the camera, I saw the entire screen was scratched. It's such a crushing feeling

Is there anything I can do? Any product I can buy to fix it? Or are we doomed?

DP is going to be so upset too. I feel like kicking myself. The kids are my responsibility (when I'm the only one at home) and I just assumed everything would be fine with them as I worked. I'm so panicked

From the Dell Premier Website:

Cleaning Your LCD or Flat Panel Monitor:

CAUTION:
Isopropyl Alcohol is a flammable liquid.

Never spray or pour any liquid directly on the LCD panel.

Do not clean the screen while the system is on.

1. Shut down the computer.

2. Disconnect power to the system or monitor.

3. Wipe the LCD or flat panel screen gently with a soft dry cloth. If any marks remain, moisten the cloth with LCD cleaner, and then gently stroke the cloth across the display in one direction, moving from the top of the display to the bottom.

NOTICE: Do not use any of the following chemicals or any solutions that contain them: Acetone, ethyl alcohol, toluene, ethyl acid, ammonia, or methyl chloride. If you have a different chemical or solution and are not sure whether it is suitable, do not use it. Using any of the chemicals in the previous list may cause permanent damage to the LCD or flat panel screen. Some commercial window cleaners contain ammonia and are therefore unacceptable.

4. Be sure the LCD or flat panel screen is dry before closing it or using the computer.

There are many cleaning solutions sold specifically as LCD cleaners. You can use these to clean LCD screens on Dell notebooks. Alternately, you may use a 50/50 isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and water mixture. Microfiber cloths such as those used to clean eyeglasses are excellent for use with LCDs.

Cloth: Kimberly-Clark Kimwipes
LCD cleaner: Staples Screen Cleaning

From another list......

Thank you so much to everyone here who posted. I got my husband a brand new LCD monitor for his birthday about a week ago and today our two year old wrote on it with a ball point pen. After calling the company twice I was pretty convinced that the monitor was ruined, but the alchol took almost all the pen off and there are just a couple places that were damaged. Thank you so much.

I know how you feel, kind of. Today my dd wrote on our micro-suede couch with a blue pen. (Thankfully I got it out with some rubbing alcohol--who knew??)

As an aside, though, if DP is not understanding that these things just happen sometimes with kids, then maybe DP needs to be left home alone with them for the day!!

What kind of monitor do you have?

Thank you so much mamas. I have to read through all the information througly when I get another moment.

Thankfully I have a very understanding DP, but I wonder if there will come a day when it will just get too much for him. Everyone has a breaking point. I feared yestrerday's incident would blow a fuse in him -- I know how well he cares for the computer, and rightfully so -- he slogged to buy it. (writing this has made me realize I have a deep seeded fear of my DP someday 'lashing' out when something bad happens. I figure it stems from my childhood when my father beat me when things weren't working out -- with my grades, or at his work etc.. )

ANYWAY, my DP came home last night, and was totally understanding. He said he'll try to figure something out (I'll tell him what I've learnt here). He's so amazing

Thanks again mamas. Oh and we have CRT 19" by Compaq. I pretty sure it's almost exclusively the anti-glare coating that is damaged. I'd imagine LCD's have the same coating. I'll see what else I can find out.
