Painting clay pots?

What's the best type of paint to use when painting clay pots? Do you need to use a primer or sealer?

I've painted pots many times and not used a primer, I use ceramic/glass paint from Michael's-it's really cheap and easy and then I finish with a spray sealant. They are so cute and easy.

I think you can use acrylics too.

What a great summer project, but I have some more questions-

If you use terracotta pots, does the paint not eventually, or rather quickly peel due to how the pot hold water? Is there a way to prevent that?

And if you cn use acrylic, can you use non enamal house paint?

thanks
