Who here is using Oak Meadow K or 1st Grade curriculum?

Hi! We have decided to use Oak Meadow in the home for the first couple of years. I've been trying to find a used copy, (and just missed Milkbarmom's post ) but eBay has been unsuccessful for me as have second-hand bookstores.

So, I thought I might ask if anyone here is using it but may be willing to sell in the next 6 months?

Thanks in advance!
Kim

Kim - Have you tried signing up for the Oak Meadow message lists? There are frequently people posting messages looking for curriculums, or selling them. Good luck! We'll be doing OM1 starting this fall.

We just decided to start using OM 2nd grade and am trying as well to find a used curric. I also signed up a few days ago for the yahoo list mentioned and am still waiting for membership approval.

OM is currently holding a sale till end of June though, 20% off, not bad.

Thank you both for your replies! I just joined the Yahoo! group as well.

Another quick question: I've read that OM Kindergarten curr. teaches the very basics like counting to 10 and the alphabet. Dd already know the "basics"...should I just skip the K and go straight to 1st grade curr.?

I think that sort of depends on your philosophy of education. OM is generally considered about 1 year 'behind' public school, and one year 'ahead' of Waldorf. So, if you lean more toward Waldorf, then stick to K.

My son would be in kindergarten if we were doing PS, but we decided to do OM for the same reasons you have. OMK seemed too basic, and my husband isn't comfortable with the idea of delaying academics. So, the working compromise was to put him in OM1, which is academcially where his public school peers will be.

caned & able: What did you think of the curriculum? Are you wanting to sell?

I have the first grade curriculum. I pm'd you if you are interested. I think it is a sweet, gentle curriculum and wonderful even if your child already knows the basics.

Would you be willing to sell your second grade?

As for the previous comment that it is behind Public School, how behind? Easier reading and such? Easier Math?

This is just a rough guideline, but generally, public school students learn in kindergarten what OM students learn in first grade, and Waldorf students learn in 2nd grade as far as reading, writing and math skills.

HTH!

I'm interested in the 1st grade curriculum if there are extras available.

I don't think Oak Meadow is "behind" public school unless you are defining education very narrowly in terms of specific reading and math skills. I think this is the mistake that public educators have made (driven by testing requirements). Assessment is so skill based, and children are not little bundles of skills, especially 6 and 7 year olds. Oak Meadow is a much gentler, more holistic, somewhat Waldorf inspired approach.

Exactly, Jessica. Which is why I put the terms 'behind' and 'ahead' in quotes.

What I have heard is that it is more along the lines of "the Unhurried Child" by Elkind. Which is really one of the reasons we started homeschooling. I think it will work for us on that basis.

BTW, is anyone selling a copy of the 2nd grade curric?
