I struggled with that with each of my kids, baby #2 was in nicu for 2 weeks, and then 4 years later when I was in labor with #3 I started bawling, that he NEEDED to be okay, That I couldn't handle another baby going to the nicu, the midwife was very supportive and made sure there were no "just in case" interventions (ie supervision in nicu, or supplemental oxygen just in case) even though he was only 35 weeks, he was left with me and only me, It definatley made a difference, so be prepared to talk this out with your next caregiver

JUst a thought for those that said you can refuse any treatment, etc in the NICU, they threatened and then began to attempt to remove my son physically from me for refusing to formula feed. I had 5 staff in my room with my mom and I and DS and they physically tried to remove him until I threatened a lawsuit as I was a protective services worker [prior to DS and knew they legally couldn't. The scare they put on moms in the NICU can be immeasureable...and mine was after DS had gained 3 oz. in 24 hours : BUt thats off topic, I thin in general, you still run into a lot of uneducated staff in hospitals period and I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with than MSUmomma. And MandyWElch, I'm coming to your NICU next time even if it means flying across the country

twins in NICU

I'm with MamaFae, totally understand. I had 3 doses of magnesium 2 for preterm labor and then during labor for high blood pressure. I nursed my twins immediately when born. (we told them no formula) Then they were taken to the NICU and they were given formula and then were vomitting (i'm so angry). Then told me I was not allowed to nurse them because their vomit had bile in it sooo they pumped their stomachs (putting tubes down their throats. My husband and I insisted that this problem had to be a side effect from the Magnesium sulfate. The doctors said absolutely not! Then went on asking if I had taken any kind of herb or drug during my pregnancy and the nurses were even worse telling me my twins were allergic to my breastmilk!! Already having two children that I nursed under my belt I knew in my heart these people were all nuts and I just needed to nurse my twins. I watched them for 3 days loosing weight. Finally I loudly insisted I nurse and they got better and better. We took them home without their consent and signed a waiver. I breastfed them on demand at home and they thrived. I later on researched why my babies were vomiting and gassy (Meconium ileus) was name and it was from the Magnesium sulfate!! I'm still so angry. "Always listen to your intincts!"

Wow, what stories. My first 2 kids were 36 weekers, and both had jaundice so bad they had to stay in the hospital a few extra days. However, I was encouraged to BF and to pump often. With my first, once I was discharged, I went home at night and came in to be with DS1 all day. At night, I pumped. Same with DS2, 17 mos later. I pumped at home and my husband would deliver the EBM in the early AM, before work. They started calling him "the milk man".

I was lucky. I got lots of support. I also had WIC and they lent me the hospital grade Medela breast pumps. And this was in two DIFFERENT hospitals in two different cities.
