I made some salad dressing with mustard, olive oil, wine vinegar, salt, pepper, and a little parsley. Is there any reason I would need to refrigerate it? I'm thinking it's OK on the shelf, but am not totally sure.

I'm trying to jump back into a more NT style diet after really falling off the wagon in the end of my pregnancy : I was just so tired and overwhelmed to cook much of anything, so we ate 'easy' foods (still mostly organic- but WAY too much sugar & alot of refined carbs) which made me feel worse. I'm ready to start feeling better again and I want my babies to be healthy We don't really eat dairy because of food allergies, except for organic cultured butter and very rarely some organic cream. DD is fairly allergic to it, so she gets very small amounts of butter every few days and thats it (she seems to tolerate that okay). We get tons of local organic veggies, fruit and pastured eggs each week from our CSA, so we are set up well for that. I just need to work on doing more sprouting, soaking and making fermented foods. I also need to make a run out to a local organic meat shop to stock up, we've gone through most of our freezer supplies. Thinking about supplementing with CLO instead of my fish oil capsules but not quite brave enough yet I felt way better during the 1st & 2nd trimesters because of eating NT type foods (minus the yucky m/s), had glowing skin and didn't gain any weight then even while eating plenty (I'm overweight so this was a good thing for me). I did some damage during the last 2 months of my pregnancy with a crappy diet though and even my skin is showing it Anyway, just reintroducing myself and saying hello!

WOw it's hard to keep track of this thread!! It runs away so quickly LOL Anyway, I'm wondering if anybody knows if raw milk is constipating? My older ds has constipation/stretched colon issues, and while he doesn't drink a lot of the milk, I'm wondering if I should reduce/eliminate it.

On the other hand, my younger ds has suddenly taken to drinking milk (since we swtiched about 4 weeks ago). He LOVES the raw milk and asks for it specificially (milk from the cows, not the grocery store!) Before, all he ever wanted to drink was diluted juice, now it's the milk. Is this okay/nutritious enough? I ask because I've seen a decrease in the other foods he's presented, and I attribute it mostly to his increase in milk drinking. He ate pancakes this morning, but neither of my children would ever turn down the opportunity to dip something in maple syrup LOL I make the pancakes with soaked oatmeal/soaked flour - does anyone else add anything *interesting* (ie. hidden veggies - which, and how?) to boost up their nutrition?

crunchy_mama I was reading EFLF in the bath last night & there is a recipe for coconut icecream in there. I think it is pretty much identical to the vanilla icecream recipe in NT except it uses cream as well as coconut cream. It was last night I read it I'm sure you could make it with just coconut cream.

I'm dithering about all this coconut after reading EFLF. I really try to avoid foreign foods that have been shipped miles to get to us. I only buy fair traded coffee, tea & cocoa so they are sort of OK. We don't use exactly much of them anyways. But what about coconut oil ? Anyone know anything about what conditions it is produced under ?

for those who make custard, do they have to be baked in individual cups? Or can you just bake the whole thing in one larger baking dish? Would muffin tins work? (I don't have any little ramkins).

I have made custard in a glass baking dish, its not the best for presentation but it worked

You can make custard in any oven proof cup, including a tea or coffee cup or mug. Things will usually say on the underside if they are oven-safe.

In the past I've made coffee flavored creme brulee in coffee cups for a dessert. fancy schmancy!

Now I need to make custard! I also need to get EFLF because I don't know the details of that book (I have NT) but at the thought of eating coconut ice cream and custard, I can feel by butt expand! I'm sure that's not the case if I get all the info. Anyway, off to make custard.

Oceanmomma, it depends on where you buy your coconut products from. Most of the reputable companies--organic, fair trade etc--will often post this information (how the fruit is harvested etc) on their websites.

Peripatetic, as long as there's no garlic in the dressing I imagine it would be fine to leave it out.

Becca, blessings on your newest addition and kudos to you for having the energy and motivation to begin NT so soon after birthing your babe.

Galeforce, I thought that the shopping guide was for members only but perhaps I'm thinking of the very detailed one

Hi Ladies, I've been looking at alot of the older NT threads and have NT on loan from the library (finally just went to overstick.com and bought my own, I'll never get through that thing in one rental ).

I had a couple of questions regarding raw milk.
I found a lady in my area on realmilk.org, and talked to her on the phone today.
She does the cow share thing ($40 per share--1/2 gallon a week--, and $3.50/1/2 gal.), she was really nice, so I agreed to drive up there (about 18 miles away) this afternoon and sign up for a share.
Well, I got up there and things were a little more... I don't know, primitive? or something.
Don't get me wrong, she was totally nice, but things just weren't really as clean/uncluttered as I had imagined.
Kind of an earthy hippy lady (no problems there ), and the barn/shed/yard was kind of haphazard. Not terrible by any means, just not alot of room for the cow to walk around, lots of flies (but I'm assuming that that's inevitable with cow manure ).

ANYWAY, I think things are probably ok, she's getting her fence fixed so that the cow can be pastured soon--right now she's still on hay, and she looks a little skinny, but she just had a calf a month or so ago, and with winter and all...I'm thinking that that's probably normal?

So, what do you gals think?
I certianly don't want to be judgemental because she's not as 'decluttered' or sanitized as I had imagined (she has a beautiful garden, so I don't think she's negligent).
But I don't want to have milk that's not healthy and safe either.

So what do you think you would do in my shoes?
I really don't know if there are any other sources of raw milk in the area, and I'd really like to get started making yogurt and butter, etc.

That and I DID sign up for a share

I guess I just can't tell if I'm feeling unsure because they live a little differently than we do, or if there's really a safety issue...I hope not, but I thought I'd run it by you all

A newbie question...
Has anybody tried the yogurt dough for pizza from NT? It came out hard like a rock... Didn't rise or anything. I feel like the yogurt in the recipe is not enough... or maybe my yogurt is not runny enough? I use half and half to make it. Should I use milk? I have no access to raw dairy.

That's the cool thinking about coconut oil... the medium chain fatty acids, are converted to instant energy b/c they don't need bile to digest. They increase your metabolism and boost thyroid. EFLF says it's the monosaturated fats that are stored on your butt and quoted a Lancet study saying as much! So reduce the olive oil and nuts but increase the CO.

Just go slow, I've been upping my CO intake and it's a little unsettling. I need to do the ACV or Swedish bitters trick they recommend before eating I think.
