Natural Air Freshners?

Hi,

Can anyone recommend how to make home-made, natural air-freshners? I hate using the scary plug-in things, although they work so well!

I need:

- something for the bathrooms
- something for the living room/kitchen area to overcome strong cooking smells
- something for the closests (we have these wicker baskets that have been giving off an unpleasant, musky odor in our closet)

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

I put baking soda in small open bowls in any area where I want the odor to disappear. As far as adding scent to a room or area, you could put a few drops of EO into the baking soda--that works really well! If you just want to freshen the scent of a room but not let the scent linger, you can add several drops of EO to a few ounces of water and put it in a spray bottle and mist.

This isn't the REASON I did this, but I noticed that the side-effect of my new cleaning system was making things smell nice.

I wanted to be able to wipe down the bathroom counters quickly on a daily basis, like flylady says, but not buy those wasteful or expensive disposable pop-up cleaning cloths. And I didn't want to pull out cleaning supplies (I knew I wouldn't do it). So I filled a pretty vase with 1/2 vinegar 1/2 water and a few drops of essential oil and threw a bunch of flannel wipes in. I pull one out and wipe everything down just as I'm leaving the bathroom and throw it in with the dirty laundry.

I discovered that having an open jar of vinegar/water/essential oils was making things smell clean. I've read that keeping an open bowl of vinegar on the counter will 'absorb' smells, especially in the kitchen. Of course, it probably doesn't hurt that I've been wiping down the counters daily with something that smells like lavender!

For closets, yeah, baking soda and eo.

I haven't tried this myself, but I have read, put cotton balls in a dish and pour some vanilla extract on them. I would think you could do the same thing w/ essential oils. I second the baking soda with eo in it too. It works! Good luck

I was just setting up some BS / vin. and EO containers in my house and got to thinking (since I don't really have any nice vases to put them in...But I did find a wine thing....not bottle....I want t o call it a caraffe?? anywhoo....) if I were to fill it with BS and ground sidewalk chalk dust then you could make it into cool sand art, and it would be an odour eater too!!!

I also put an open jar of BS into a small basket with a lid to hide it a little for in the bathroom.....perhaps I should switch the vin in the kitchen and BS in the bathroom to the other way around so that the BS doesn't get hard and clumpy with the moisture of the bathroom.....

I have some natural cedar blocks in the closet that we salvaged from a fallen tree in the back bush: every so often I sand them down to get them smelling all yummy again, and I also put a couple of drops of Lavender EO on them, just cause I like the smell!

In the kitchen I have a small open bowl of fresh ground coffee...seems to help to keep bad smells at bay. I also put BS in the garbage can daily, and pour a little down the sink too.

i use charcol in the fridge. I just use the fish filter kind. I also throw EO where ever i can. i put some EO in baking soda and put on the floor for a while before i vaccum. You can put EOs on a cotton ball and hide it for a great smell. You can rub them on light bulbs to get a brust of smell everytime the light comes on.
