Push mowers? - Page 2

Wow, I was really cautious with our reel mower around kids. One advantage was with older kids--we let the 11 and 13 yo living with us take turns mowing, after explaining the safety issues.

They can still fling debris up, but not with the speed of a gas mower. The blades are much more of an issue since they are much more enticing and less "scary" than the hidden, loud blades on a gas mower. I always though our reel mower should have some sort of sover over the spinning blade assemply.

ITA though on the electric being like vacuuming the lawn.

Soooo - this is NOT a good option for folks with very uneven ground? I mean we have lots of holes and such from the blasted dog. Our ground is very, very lumpy - for lack of a better word. I had been considering one, but I'm wondering if it wouldn't work.

DH uses a gas mower. I am deathly afraid of it & won't use it. No particular reason - it just tweaks me out. I've been thinking that if I had one of these I could do our very small, city yard myself...

We have a holey, bumpy lawn, and we use the Scott's mower that a previous post had a link to. I've been using it for 2 years and it works great, and I've never sharpened it. You shouldn't let your lawn get over 6 inches, though, or it won't work. We did that last summer and had floppy grass until fall! I'm scared of power mowers too. Ooh- and just got a weed whacker for mother's day . I think it's the perfect complement to a reel mower.

Thanks! I posted on freecycle & someone actually responded that they had one. I hope the deal works out. I've got a bad track record with freecycle.

I am picking one up today to try. I found it listed in "cheapcycle"

Our reel mower works well, on bumpys, weeds, and St. Augistine.

Have lots of fun! I find it is work but I much prefer it to a power mower of any kind. Remember, 1 hour of mowing with a gas mower equals 150 kilometers driving in emmissions. Electric would depend on how much power is used and how the electricity is produced for the environmental impact.
