Rant Redux - no I haven't given birth yet!

Dear all my friends and relatives,

Thank you so much for expressing your caring and excitement about the impending birth of my new child. However, calling to ask me if the baby has been born yet is not the best way to share in the experience. I wonder if you realize that when you call there are only 3 possibilities:

Possibility 1: I haven't given birth yet, and that means I'm very uncomfortable and impatient for the baby to come. Believe it or not I'm actually more impatient than you are. So you asking me only adds to the stress and pressure I'm feeling.

Possibility 2: I am in the middle of labor and you're bothering me!

Possibility 3: I've given birth, but I haven't yet recovered enough to feel up to calling you. Thanks for rushing me!

To help you all understand this, I've changed my answering machine message to say that the baby has not been born yet. I've also stopped answering the phone so that you all can have your question answered by that simple, clear answering machine message. For those of you who are just too clever, the fact that you got my answering machine does not mean that I'm at the birthing center giving birth and does not give you license to ask if the baby has been born yet! Please people, believe the machine!

Hopefully after the baby has been born I will be able to forget all this and come to like you again.

I wish I had our answering machine hooked up to do that. I quit answering the phone and just look at the caller id. I had one of my 5yr olds playdate friend
her grandmother called Sat. Have you had the baby. No. She called Sunday I didn't answer the phone and than she freaking called 3 times on Monday.
I finally answered the phone and than after they played she goes Well I'm going to keep calling. I said please don't because I'm not answering the phone.
We aren't even friends just the gm of my 5 yr olds friend. ugh.

Do people become stupid when you become pregnant???????????????????

I've *so* been there. I'm sorry for both of you... People get so excited and anxious for some news that yes, they do become stupid. Mom2-4Gs, I would have been more "frank" than you...

When that happened to me I would just say "yes, i have had the baby" and hang up.
I would also say that when people would ask me "when are you going to have that baby" while I was preg. I would reply "I already did" and walk away

My DH joked that I should say "Eh, we changed our minds, we're not going to have the baby after all."

I've started avoiding the phone. People leave a message, and depending on their message I might call them back. The family members that leave a message asking if we've had the baby yet and to call them back have yet to recieve a response from me. Argh - they've already asked to be called day or night whenever the baby comes - which I agreed to, yet feel the need to call at least once a day asking if baby is here yet.

My in laws (still married) don't seem to communicate well. FIL calls DH's cell several times a day asking for an update, while MIL calls the house or cell phones every day or so asking if baby arrived yet - ummm 'ask your hubby?'...

My Dad is driving me nuts, he seems to think if I don't answer the phone it means baby arrived, so start flipping out and calling us more. If he can't get ahold of us he tries calling my cell, DH's cell, leaving messages everywhere, DH's office, home in a circular pattern. He's 2nd on the list of people to call once baby arrives, knows this, and will be called day or night. Yet he doesn't stop calling.

Hey sistas, I just HAVE to jump into this board and say I SO UNDERSTAND. My due date was two days ago, but I get an average of 5 calls a day asking the same thing. I DO have messages recorded on my cell and home phone. I only talk to my immediate family and birth attendants. SO FRUSTRATING. Here's hoping all the April due date club folks have their babes soon! and the early may mamas too!
