I read this book a couple of years ago (picked it up at Goodwill). I liked it, well all but the war games part. I didn't really get why that needed to be added , like men just can't control their animalistic instinct to fight/kill. A good game of soccer would have been more fitting. I do hope I am remembering that from the right book, it has been a while since I read it.

I read it in an environmental impact class. It was a great book. I had forgotten all about it. I had no idea there was another book. I think I am going to dig it out and read it again.

i liked that they put in the war games. first cause it leads up to him in the place he goes to next, and second, in tribal life MOST tribes have a war game of one kind or another. so why wouldnt a "civilized" society that lives tribally?
also. i honestly dont think that men CAN control their primal urges. but that just my opinion.

I actually think a lot of men's aggressions are environmentally based but then again jmo. I would think growing up in such a peaceful way would lead to men not having such issues with the need to fight or war. Or at least having the mind or I guess means to not have to give into their desires to fight. I guess I don't think it's something men just can't control, some don't even need to control such things at all because the desire isn't there for them (how are men like that explained even in our very much less than perfect society). I really do think most human beings are able to control their urges, I give men much more credit than that.
I guess though for the plot of this book they needed him to have to stay longer so he would get indoctrinated and want to stay forever and him being wounded worked for that.
