Hi all you fun folks (and brilliant besides),
I've been doing a weekly radio program about library stuff. Each week I choose a theme, select library resources that connect, throw in a few additional bits from the state library system, mix in one or two interesting web-sites and then discuss for 1/2 hour. Occasionally I have a guest.
This coming Monday I'll be talking about technology on several levels and next Monday it will be on the theme of changing identity.
This theme began from reading a book entitled Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent. Norah disguised herself as Ned and ventured out into the world of men. Her adventures make for an interesting book, but the most intriguing part for me was the wear and tear on her psyche of pretending to be someone else for an extended period of time. http://tinyurl.com/lab7p at amazon for more info.
Another book about someone pretending to be someone else (several someone else's actually) is Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise by Ruth Reichl. http://tinyurl.com/ob62v
I've thought of several other books with similar themes: Black Like Me is another example.
However, I'd love to have some more examples of books, especially fiction, not to mention movies (my library has a good video collection) songs (for songs I'll need full info so I can try to find them to play on the air), and any other media anyone can come up with. Web-sites, too.
My focus will be on the emotional strain of pretense...I think people often take up something like this lightheartedly, tongue-in-cheek and then are somewhat shocked at their inner reactions to ongoing deception.
Here is a list of previous radio programs with the resources discussed, to give you an idea of what I'm doing:
