My babe's breath smells like ammonia sometimes!

He is 13 months old. I've noticed it two different times. It is quite alarming, though not super-strong. I googled it and a symptom of liver issues and encephalitis came up. Any words of experience of advice?

Thanks!

If your baby is usually thirsty and has bad breath - you may need to check to see if your baby is diabetic. Diabetics usually have an unusual odor to their mouths.

Diabetes was the first thing I thought of too. I'd definitely get it checked out.

Diabetics have a sweet smell to their breath - not an amonia smell (just had a nephew and a niece diagnosed with this and the breath was the first sign). An amonia or acetone smell can mean he's dehydrated. I get that sometimes late in the day when I realize I've barely had anything to drink all day.

But to be on the safe side, I'd definitely check with your ped.

My boyfriend has peculiar breath that knocks me out sometimes - but he has celiac disease - which is, his body can't break down gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley). He was just diagnosed with it this year so he's still trying to detox the years of damage to his intestinal lining.

Breath is one of those things - it can signify a lot of silent internal problems.

I will take him to a health care provider. I have noticed that it is usually on a hot day that his breath does this... and I have been eating a lot of gluteny stuff (his diet is 96% mommie milk) and he mainly only snacks on gluteny things... Normally, he has a nice milky breath smell!!! yum!
