That is EXACTLY what I think, Desiree.
His name and number were listed as "Private" on my caller ID, and the number he gave me doesn't even work. He's called twice. The first time was on Friday. He didn't mention the $1000, but he was very concerned about if I was offering a reward. I had an icky feeling about him from the start. I asked for his number and said I'd call back. The number didn't work. Then the a-hole called me again yesterday. I was trying to get him to describe his ring to me but he just kept repeating the vague "silver color with blue stone" I put in the ad. He asked again about the reward. I said $50 (although I might have paid more), mainly because I felt that a sincere person would want to give my ring back, and I'd pay them for their kindness and the trouble to pick it up, keep it safe and find me. Make sense? Then he said, "Well I want $1000 for it." I told him I wasn't going to play that game. He said, "Then I guess you don't want your ring back." I said, "I guess not," and he hung up on me.
So I think this scumbucket runs scams on people who lose sentimental jewelry and post lost ads in the paper. I'm sure there are plenty of trusting souls out there who get taken by this jerk.
