chocolate cake recipes?

Well, it doesn't have to be chocolate but I want to make our good friends a semi-decadent birthday cake (three are celebrating birthdays this month). I am not an experienced baker (I have only made carrot cake). Can anyone pass on a yummy recipe that would work for a novice baker. I find cake baking very intimidating Thanks!

That cake recipe is similar to one I use. The only differences are that I use fructose instead of sugar, whole wheat flour (not noticeable with the cocoa) and applesauce instead of oil. Substituting the applesauce for the oil makes it virtually fat-free and just as moist if not moister. It's super yummy. Enjoy.

Can I recommend a book? Or two? Have you ever seen "The Cake Mix Doctor" or "Chocolate from the Cake Mix Doctor"? A friend of mine used the chocolate one to make me a cake for my last birthday, and I don't think I've ever had a better German chocolate cake! The recipes are simple and easy to follow, and if you're like me, that's a big deal. An added plus is that the cake tastes like you've spent forever in the kitchen baking this wonderful cake.
