Yellowjacket hive in attic, ideas on removal?

So, I'm in my new house, and while clearing up the attic space(big attic, enough that we're remodeling it and turning it into a bedroom) I discovered a yellow jacket hive.

Any ideas on how to remove it? Or is this something I need to call the professionals in to do?

We've had yellowjackets set-up house in our boat two years in a row. We covered the boat with a huge tarp and threw a Raid bug bomb underneath and bricked-down the edges. Two hours later, dead yellowjackets and no more the rest of the Summer.

HOWEVER, in a house, I wouldn't use a bomb. I would call a professional exterminator to get rid of them. Easier to do it in the beginning of remodelling than later!

We had a hive on a shed at the cottage. My dad (a very old 65 at the time) tried the smoke/fire route.
It just managed to REALLY p!ss them off. I had never seen my dad run. Nor have I since. OOOOPEN the DOOOOOORRRRRRRR!!!

Anyway, I would not dare such a thing yourself. You'll never get out of the attic before they catch you. (of course, the fire thing is a very bad idea too.)

Call the professionals and make sure that they don't use noxious chemicals.

Right now we have a bumble bee hive inside the roof of our outside entryway. DH and I are at odds. I refuse the chemical route. To him, there is no other option.

I'll be watching this thread for other ideas.

It's my understanding that yellow jackets choose a new site for a nest each season. If it were late in the season, I probably wouldn't do anything, but since it is the beginning of the season, I'm not sure what I would do in your shoes. My dh is allergic so I would probably wait for a cool evening and spray the nest with wasp poison. I have never used poison in my house, but in this situation, I would because yellow jackets don't sting singly and the risk of multiple stings is far greater to my family than the risk of a one-time exposure to wasp poison.

This nest is definitely active, I've seen a few yellowjackets in the attic. And those things are destructive, I've watched them eat through drywall and plaster. So, I want them out, before fall comes and the nest is 4x the size that it is now.

If it was in a better location, I'd try the soapy/boiling water thing I've read about, but it is attached to the chimney, a few inches from the floor(so no way to put a bucket underneath it to catch the water), and actually, for the same reason, I'm hesitant to use spray on poison, because I'm afraid of it running down the chimney, and wrecking the walls downstairs.

So, I guess exterminator it is.

My Dh tried the water thing on a small outdoor nest at night and boy was that a mistake. It was like a nightmare. Even though he tucked all of his clothes in they got in and he got a lot of stings. Even though he isn't allergic he did end up with a fever. Our neighbor ended up using poison and they were gone fast.

UNless you have experience with bees, etc, and have protective clothing, I wouldnt mess with it. Call someone.

I would definately call someone and get them out asap. Yellow jackets can cause massive damage to your walls. I would get a professional because you can see the outside of the nest but there is a possiblity they have built part of the nest inside the walls too ( I had some friends this happened to it was not pretty).
